«Breaking News» Oscars SUSPENDS plan for a 'Most Popular Film' award this year

There won't be an Oscar handed out for 'Most Popular Film' after all - at least for now.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is suspending plans to award a new Oscar for popular films at the 2019 ceremony amid widespread backlash.

It revealed on Thursday that the organization will further study plans for the category.

'While remaining committed to celebrating a wide spectrum of movies, the Academy announced it will not present the new Oscars category at the upcoming 91st awards,' a statement from the Academy read.

'The Academy recognized that implanting any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released.'

The Academy said its Board of Governors continues to be 'actively engaged in discussions' regarding the category.

But whether the category will ever see the light of day - or our television screens - remains unclear.

The Academy only states that the Board 'will examine and seek additional input regarding this category'.

Backlash followed swiftly after the new category for 'Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film' was announced last month.

There were immediate questions about what the criteria would be for a 'popular film'.

Many feared the tactic was merely a way to deny films that were both critically and commercially popular, such as Black Panther, a Best Picture nomination.

'There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,' the Academy's CEO, Dawn Hudson, said in a statement.

'We have made changes to the Oscars over the years – including this year – and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.'

The 91st annual Oscars will be held February 24 in Los Angeles.

The changes came after ratings for the 90th Academy Awards (pictured) fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year

The ceremony will undergo some changes this year, with the academy planning to shorten the ceremony to three hours.

In order to do so, it plans to hand out Oscars in six to eight categories during commercial breaks.

The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast and selected categories will be rotated each year.

Both the show's producers and the Academy will collaborate to select which categories are not aired live.

The Academy also still plans to shorten the awards season by moving up the 2020 Oscars by a few weeks to February 9, 2020.

Ratings for the 90th Academy Awards fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year.

It was the first time the glitzy awards ceremony had fewer than 30 million viewers since 2008 when Jon Stewart hosted and No Country For Old Men won best picture.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 2018 ceremony also clocked it at nearly four hours, making it the longest show in over a decade.

It revealed on Thursday that...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
