«Breaking News» J.K. Rowling tells fan she had Hermione pronounce her name on purpose

Unless you were an expert in Greek mythology, you may have struggled to pronounce Hermione Granger's name correctly back when the first Harry Potter books hit shelves.

Quite a lot of fans of the series were saying her name as 'Hermy-own' or 'Hermy-one' as they tore through the early novels — until author J.K. Rowling helpfully wrote a passage in Goblet of Fire, having Hermione teach Viktor Krum the right way to say her name.

This week, a fan ventured on Twitter that Rowling likely included that bit on purpose to help readers out — and the writer tweeted back to confirm that it was true.

Correct! J.K. Rowling confirmed a Twitter fan's theory about the fourth book in the Harry Potter series this week

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hermione dates Viktor Krum, a visiting student from the Eastern European magic school of Durmstrang.

'Hermione was now teaching Krum to say her name properly; he kept calling her "Hermy-own,"' the passage reads.

'"Her – my – oh – nee," she said, slowly and clearly.

'"Herm – own – ninny."

'"Close enough," she said, catching Harry’s eye and grinning.'

While it makes sense that Krum, who spoke limited English, would struggle with the name, plenty of English-speaking readers were also butchering it at home — something Rowling came to learn to well from interactions with her fans.

Huh? Before Goblet of Fire was released, there were three Harry Potter books — and no films to help guide people to say 'Hermione' the right way

On a Monday, a woman from India who goes by Atulla wrote on Twitter: 'Theory: @jk_rowling included that passage on how to pronounce Hermione's name in Goblet of Fire just to school all of us who were saying HER-MY-OWN like Viktor Krum.'

Rowling happened to come across the tweet, replying: 'Theory correct.'

Her reply has been liked 16,000 times, with many fans chiming in to share how they used to mispronounce her name.

'My favourite mispronunciation of 'Hermione' was "Hermy - won." It suited her!' Rowling wrote in 2017.

In fact, this isn't the first time that Rowling has said she included the passage to guide readers.

In 2000 while promoting the release of Goblet of Fire, the author went on the Today show, where she was interviewed by Katie Couric.

When Couric read a fan question about how to pronounce all the made-up names and words in her books, Rowling laughed.

'Erm, people will notice I put in how to pronounce Hermione in book four,' she said, confirming to Couric that a lot of people were asking about it.

'I introduced Hermione to a Bulgarian who couldn't say her name and so then she explains it, so that was my get-out-of-jail card on that one,' she added.

Though Rowling certainly came up with a few words of her own, most of the names are based in mythology — including Hermione.

In Greek mythology, Hermione was the daughter King Menelaus of Sparta and Helen of Troy.

Hermione is also the name of the queen in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
