From chiffon dresses to awkward hemlines and very strange hairstyles, the school formal seemed to be the place every student tried on their most eccentric look.
But while you thought photos from these events were long hidden in your parent's garage, some brave souls have revealed their snaps online for a good cause.
Nova radio hosts Fitzy and Wippa asked their listeners to upload photos of their dances to Instagram with the hashtag #formalphotofriday to win time at their formal evening at Doltone House on September 19.
There was a collection of brightly coloured suits and gothic dresses among the best entrants, with Kate Ritchie, Sophie Monk and Gladys Berejiklian even joining the fun.
Mullets for all: These boys went for a very flamboyant style with slightly tip-dyed hair on the top
Frills and spills: 'Mum lookin fresh back in the 80's,' said the owner of this picture
Now that's some hair! Some people joked about this image being of the boys from Panic at the Disco
Trip down memory lane (looking at photo albums) with the kids yesterday and we came across this beauty. He used to be my boyfriend. Now he's my husband. Ahhh the sweet memories of youth. Now we have a daughter the age I was in this photo
Two stand out memories for me. Rocking up to my year 10 and 12 school formals in style!
Influenced by the movie, Pretty in Pink (hence the pink satin & lace), and the tv series, Anne of Green Gables, (hence the puffed sleeves, hairstyle and large pink bow in my hair)
Just remembered that I got a call from our year 12 coordinator because there were rumours of me damaging someone's dress
Look who it is! Our mate @markberetta has contributed to #FormalPhotoFriday and this might be our favourite photo yet!
Kate Ritchie (left) contributed to the influx of photos, as did Dr Chris Brown (right)
Well these two managed to match each other, just not in the ways you might think
Five Seconds of Summer (pictured) posing for their very relaxed formal at the end of school
Tans all around were encouraged at this fancy affair! These four ladies posed for a classic photo to commemorate the occasion
Wippa (bottom right) decided to share his own take on the hashtag with this throwback
Pink was the flavour of the month with this group of sassy ladies ready to dance
Sophie Monk (right) at her formal before she began her lifelong career in the spotlight
The year 11 'semi formal' at Ballajura Community College. Really took the 'semi' to heart here - it's like I don't know if I am Billy Joe Armstrong from Greenday or Jason Mraz
My formal photos are lost in the abyss of MySpace so this is the best I can do on #FormalPhotoFriday
What a cutie! @natarshabelling at her debut in a puffy lilac number

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
