«Breaking News» Expert reveals the one everyday task killing productivity

There's nothing more daunting at the beginning of the day than sitting down to an endless stream of emails that have flooded in overnight.

And while many deal with every request as it arrives in a bid to 'stay on top of things', this can actually make you less productive.

Speaking to My Domaine, productivity expert Laura Vanderkam shared her tips for tackling this task in less time without the need for an empty inbox.

Don't deal with email first thing

Email tends to be one of the first things you give attention to when you sit down at your desk.

And while ploughing your way through these might feel like wiping the slate clean, according to Ms Vanderkam, this isn't necessarily the best use of your time.

Instead, she suggests scanning email for anything urgent first then making time later in the morning to deal with any new tasks.

Three tips for staying on top of your inbox

Read email once: If you are taking the time to read an email, take time to response. A delay in replying means you will need to read again later. Over the course of a week, this ends up being a lot of time wasted re-reading emails.

Avoid email ping-pong: Often it can be quicker to contact a person directly, either via text or phone than message back and forth via email. Consider this before sending a reply.

Create email free zones: Stop the incessant interruptions by setting just two email windows a day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon or decide on times throughout the day that allow you the most control.

'Glance at your emails as you're about to get out the door - or on public transit or while parked in the garage at your office to make sure there's nothing urgent,' the author of Off The Clock told the publication.

Your email tab doesn't always need to be open

According to Forbes, email occupies 23 per cent of an average employee's workday, and that average employee checks his or her email 36 times an hour.

The impact on productivity then is enormous, especially if you need sustained concentration to attend to a difficult task.

To counter this, Ms Vanderkam said it's better to work with a closed email tab for a period of time or take a break from a task in order to check for updates.

'Feel free to open the tab frequently, but make sure you're consciously choosing to open it,' she said.

Your inbox is not your to-do list

There's a great sense of achievement to be had once an email inbox is cleared, but does this actually contribute to your productivity in any real sense?

Ms Vanderkam takes the view email is a tool to do your job, not the job itself and while some email will require attention not everything needs to be treated as a priority.

Research carried out by the University of British Columbia revealed that not only is constant email checking stress-inducing but it also fragments attention.

A two-week-long experiment looked at the behaviour of two groups, one who checked email at will, and the other who were limited to checking only three times per day (they had to keep their email program close the rest of the day).

The findings showed that participants reported significantly less stress when they were working under the limited-email condition than under the unlimited-email condition.

'The only way to spend less time on email is to choose to spend less time on email,' Ms Vanderkam said.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
