Dylan Hartley scored a try on his comeback as Northampton got their season up and running on Friday night.
England hooker Hartley, who has led England to 23 victories under Eddie Jones, was making his first appearance at Franklin's Gardens after five months out with concussion.
The 32-year-old missed England's tour of South Africa and was named on the bench for last night's clash with Paul Gustard's Harlequins.
Dylan Hartley came on as replacement for first appearance in five months and scored a try
Hartley touched down from a rolling maul 10 minutes after coming on as a second-half replacement.
Dan Biggar was playing his first game on Saints' home turf and the Wales fly-half impressed with a 17-point haul from the boot.
Following their 27-16 defeat at Gloucester last Saturday, this was a welcome win for Northampton's new director of rugby Chris Boyd.
The foundations for this hard-fought win were laid down by a fearsome forward display with young England-qualified lock David Ribbans putting in a man-of-the-match performance alongside Courtney Lawes.
Quins arrived at Northampton full of confidence following their 51-23 demolition of Sale Sharks last Saturday.
James Lang led a lightning breakaway to cross for Harlequins as they mounted a fightback
Fresh from his man-of-the-match display last weekend against Sale, Marcus Smith fired the visitors into an early 3-0 lead with a penalty after eight minutes.
The home pack too control for the rest of the first-half, however, with three Biggar penalties pushing the home side into a deserved 9-3 lead before the break.
Biggar fired over another penalty before Hartley replaced James Fish in the 46th minute.
It took Quins 50 minutes to pay a visit to Northampton's 22 but they made the most of their rare foray into opposition territory as Danny Care pounced from close range.
The Saints response was almost immediate as Hartley touched down from a powerful driving maul; his first try in nine months with Biggar adding the extras.
A brilliant breakaway effort from substitute Quins fly-half James Lang ensured a nervy finish but Biggar's firth penalty of the evening sealed the win.
Despite scoring a try, Danny Care couldn't muster a comeback win for Harlequins

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
