«Breaking News» Awkward truth behind Queen's handshake with IRA leader Martin McGuinness revealed

It was seen as a historic mark of progress – the Queen's handshake with former IRA commander Martin McGuinness in 2012.

But for the monarch, it was not a profound gesture of reconciliation following decades of bloodshed.

She simply thought that it would have been awkward if she did not take his hand, according to a new book by Daily Mail features writer Robert Hardman.

The Queen's thoughts were disclosed by David Cameron. He said he had told the Queen that her meeting with the late Mr McGuinness, then Northern Ireland's deputy first minister, had been a great milestone of modern diplomacy.

Mr Cameron, Prime Minister at the time, told the author: 'I think it was the most transformative bit of diplomacy I have seen. It was amazing.'

But in a response that summed up what Mr Hardman refers to as her 'modest, no-nonsense approach', the Queen admitted: 'What was I meant to do? Of course I shook his hand. It would be awkward not to.'

The book, Queen Of The World, also revealed that the monarch was faintly embarrassed by the adulation after shaking hands with the man Mr Hardman described as 'the leader of an organisation that had once been hell-bent on exterminating her entire family'.

'She was, as ever, not sure what all the fuss was about,' Mr Cameron said. Mr McGuinness died last year.

The book also says the Queen's famous speech on her 21st birthday was actually pre-recorded.

Delivered on a tour of South Africa with her parents in 1947, it has the famous line: 'My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family.'

But Mr Hardman asserts that the speech, broadcast on radio, had been recorded in a Zimbabwe hotel room a week earlier to spare her the pressure.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
