Mexican actress Kate del Castillo is suing the Mexican government after accusing officials of 'political persecution' following her well-publicized meeting with Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman and Hollywood star Sean Penn.
Del Castillo, 46, is suing Mexican officials for $60million, claiming that former president Enrique Pena Nieto and his administration's Attorney General's Office [PGR] dragged her name through the mud during an investigation after her trip to Mexico to talk to the Sinaloa Cartel leader in October 2015.
She said Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Fels told her that Penn had a helping hand in El Chapo's capture in January 2016 after the drug baron had spent two years on the run.
El Chapo was then extradited to the United States and is currently facing trial in a federal New York court.
'Sean Penn helped with his (El Chapo's) location and subsequent capture,' Del Castillo said during a press conference Thursday, which marked her return to Mexico since the eventful meeting took place with the then fugitive kingpin three years ago.
'I was not aware of this situation and this is the betrayal I was talking about.'

Del Castillo has always steadfastly claimed that she was not involved in the operation that led to El Chapo's arrest.
She flew out with Penn and another Hollywood producer because she was interested in documenting El Chapo's life on movie screens, a project she is no longer interested in carrying out.
Rolling Stone ran a story of Penn's meeting with El Chapo soon after.
'He behaved very badly, he did not protect me and risked my life,' Del Castillo said of Penn during her hour-long press conference in Mexico City while flanked by her three lawyers.
Del Castillo narrated a three-part series, 'The Day I Met El Chapo', for Netlix which debuted in October 2017.

Mexican prosecutors opened an inquiry into Del Castillo following the secret sit down she arranged with Penn and the former fugitive drug boss.
'I have nothing to hide, I did not commit any crime and I was the victim of political persecution,' del Castillo said.
'Information was filtered to the media, which is an illegal act. It affected my rights to honor, dignity, freedom of expression and thought.'
The actress was never charged, she claims that prosecutors leaked information that damaged her reputation.
Del Castillo, who owns her own tequila brand, Honor, added that allegations made by government officials that charged that she was romantically involved hurt her opportunities as landing acting roles.
She is best known for her lead role the 2011 television series, 'La Reina del Sur' ['The Queen of the South], which is based a young woman that becomes the drug cartel boss in the south of Spain.
People in Spanish Awards recognized her at the 2011 Best Actress.
The second season of 'La Reina del Sur' slated to air in 2019.
Del Castillo is no longer in touch with Penn.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
