Dramatic audio from the air traffic control tower at an Alaska airport during Friday morning’s earthquake describes how one FedEx cargo plane was forced to circle in the air as it approached the runway to land.
FedEx Flight 49 departed Indianapolis and was scheduled to land at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport just before 9am on Friday.
As the Boeing 777 plane approached the destination, a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the largest city in Alaska, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The chaos that ensued at the airport apparently forced FedEx 49 to fly in a circle once more before landing as the air traffic control tower was grappling with the quake.

‘FedEx, go around! FedEx, go around!,’ a panicked air traffic controller is heard telling the pilot in audio obtained by ABC News.
‘Roger sir, are you planning to evacuate the tower?’ the pilot is heard in the audio asking air traffic controllers.
‘We’re just inspecting it now,’ an air traffic controller replies.
‘It looks a part of our ceiling’s come down, and our equipment is everywhere.’

The flight tracking site FlightAware showed the path that the plane took before its final approach.
After one loop, the aircraft landed safely.

Later on Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration said operations were halted at the airport following the earthquake, which rocked buildings and damaged roads.
FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer in Washington state said Friday it's not known when inbound flights will resume and that travelers should check with their airlines.
Kenitzer and Alaska transportation spokeswoman Meadow Bailey say telephone service is out at the airport.
The FAA spokesman says the airport tower was evacuated and flights that could be diverted were being sent to Kodiak.
He says inbound international flights to Anchorage were being guided by controllers at a regional radar approach facility.
Alaska Gov. Bill Walker tweeted that he has issued a disaster declaration.
The quake damaged buildings in Anchorage and buckled roads and sent people running into the streets.
There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
