Mason Mount was trying to get to sleep when his phone unexpectedly started to buzz. He took a glance and saw that England Under 19's head coach Keith Downing was on the other end but he let the call ring out.
It was 11:30pm and Mount, who was in Holland preparing for a game with Vitesse Arnhem, felt that whatever business Downing wanted could be attended to the following morning. Then, though, his phone began to buzz once more.
This time it was Chelsea's academy manager Neil Bath but, again, Mount never answered. Instead with concerns beginning to grow, he rang his dad, Tony.

Though it was late at night, Mount's father told his son to ring Downing back immediately. It was a good job he did. Within seconds, it became apparent the news was anything but bad. He was being summoned for an unexpected opportunity at St George's Park.
'When (Downing) answered, he said: "Gareth Southgate wants you to come in and train for four days before the start of the World Cup",' says Mount.
'It was quite surreal to hear and I couldn't believe it at first. There was no hint. I trained for four days. What an unbelievable experience.'
Southgate, England's head coach, has been keeping an eye on Mount for a number of years and has name-checked him several times in recent months.
It is little wonder. Now on-loan at Derby County, the 19-year-old is the hottest talent in the Championship and thriving under his hero Frank Lampard.

Mount has played all bar 15 minutes of Derby's opening seven games, scoring four times. His ambition is to one day do what Lampard did for Chelsea and England, plundering goals in the biggest games, and the early signs are encouraging.
TEAM | YEAR | APPS | GOALS |
---|---|---|---|
Vitesse Arnhem (loan) | 2017/18 | 39 | 14 |
Derby County (loan) | 2018/19 | 7 | 4 |
Lampard informed Mount after training last Friday he had received his first England Under 21 call-up and his constant advice — and occasional sharp words — are exactly what he needs at this stage of a career he hopes will see him become a regular starter at Stamford Bridge.
'I wanted to test myself in the Championship,' says Mount, who turned down offers from Champions League sides PSV Eindhoven and Ajax to move to Pride Park.
'There were options in Germany or I could have gone back to Holland but I wanted to come back and show what I can do.
'Frank is always someone I have looked up to. He has been brilliant. He has spoken to me a lot one-to-one and being an attacking midfielder, I couldn't learn off anyone bigger or better. I'm just taking as much as I can off him and Jody (Morris) as well and learning as much as I can.
'That is where I want to end up, like him. I got 14 (goals) last season in the Dutch league and I have started off with four this season. So I just want to keep working hard in that part of my game — score goals and continue to be a threat going forward.'
Mount grabbed a goal on his Derby debut, equalising as they went on to beat Reading 2-1
England boss Gareth Southgate invited Mount to train with the seniors before the World Cup
He is likely to win his first Under-21 cap in Thursday's Euro 2019 qualifier against Holland at Carrow Road.
Mount is ahead of Phil Foden, the Manchester City protege, and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho in the limelight and head coach Aidy Boothroyd explained why.
'There is no doubt that Phil and Jadon are huge talents,' said Boothroyd.
'But so is Mason. He is a really solid, strong character too. He has pretty much got all the attributes you need, you just hope he gets the opportunity. You can see that Chelsea are plotting a way for him.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
