«Breaking News» Restaurant in Salisbury sealed off after 'Russian' couple suffer novichok symptoms

Salisbury suffered another novichok scare tonight after a man and woman became  ill in a restaurant near where the Skripals were poisoned.

Italian diner Prezzo was on lockdown as police in hazmat suits and face masks dealt with the 'medical incident'.

The witness who initially phoned 999 said the scene was 'like Armageddon' as diners panicked and a huge police presence showed up.

The diner, who asked not to be named, said one of those taken ill was a blonde woman in her late twenties.

She told the BBC: 'The blonde appeared to be at the table on her own and kept going away, getting up and coming back again.

'When she came back she was hysterical. She called paramedics and the next thing an ambulance turns up and they come rushing in.

'The ill man was found in the toilet after having a fit and they came back in all gowned up with all the white and the masks on.'

A source briefed by the emergency services said the couple were suffering with symptoms consistent with nerve agent poisoning.

They said: 'The ambulance crew at the site took the decision that the symptoms seemed consistent with novichok poisoning which is why the called their colleagues in the police.'

But the source stressed: 'The symptoms of novhichok poisoning and particular types of narcotic abuse are very similar.'

Witnesses described police ‘covering someone up with a blanket’ in the middle of the street.

Police took diners to an empty shop after the incident, and they were still being kept there six hours later.

They've been told they might need to provide blood samples at Salisbury Hospital tonight.

Another diner, Amanda Newton, said she was sitting next to 'two Russians' when they became sick at their table.

It's the latest novichok scare for Salisbury after ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal was poisoned in March and Dawn Sturgess was killed by the nerve agent in June.

The ill couple were conscious when medics arrived and are being treated at the scene, a spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said.

Public Health England said it had been informed of the incident.

Wiltshire Police said: 'Police were called by the ambulance service to Prezzo, High Street, Salisbury, at 6.45pm today (16 September) following a medical incident involving two people - a man and a woman.

'As a precautionary measure, the restaurant and surrounding roads have been cordoned off while officers attend the scene and establish the circumstances surrounding what has led them to fall ill.'

David Taylor said the front entrance to Salisbury District Hospital was surrounded by fire engines blocking off the entrance to A&E.

Mr Taylor, who was bringing a patient in for treatment, said on arrival they were met by security staff who guided them to the new A&E department.

'It was obviously a major incident. All the staff were under pressure but were brilliant,' he said.

Customers inside the Old Ale House pub have been told they can't leave, according to the Salisbury Journal.

It comes just six months after former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned while eating at Italian restaurant Zizi in the town.

Prezzo, on the High Street in Salisbury, is 300 metres away from Zizi and only a short walk from Queen Elizabeth Gardens, where 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess was fatally poisoned by novichok at the end of June.

A witness at the scene said: 'There’s one fire engine, one ambulance, four police cars, a man in a full white body suit with a mouth-mask and police not allowed to tell us what’s happening.'

A worker at pub The New Inn said: 'Police have been very vague about the whole thing. We don't know what's going on.

'As soon as the emergency services turned up people started evacuating. We've only got a few customers left.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
