«Breaking News» LSU basketball player Wayde Sims, 20, is shot to death near Southern University campus

A chilling new cellphone video emerged on social media on Friday showing the moment LSU basketball player Wayde Sims was shot dead during a brawl.

The video recorded by an eyewitness was shared on Instagram but later deleted and handed over to the Baton Rouge Police Department, which is investigating the killing of the 20-year-old college athlete.

The short clip, shot from a passing car, offers a different view of the same melee that was shown in another video released by the police this afternoon.

The shaky 28-second clip devoid of audio shows a melee involving several young men.

The pugilists are seen punching one another. Sims is seen in the middle of the fracas wearing a white T-shirt and dark-colored jeans.

Unlike that earlier video, which cuts off the moment the fatal shot is fired, the new recording shows Sims getting struck by the bullet and collapsing face-down to the ground.

The footage shows the LSU student lying motionless on the ground and the other participants of the altercation scattering in all directions.

Detectives are also looking to identify the other people in the video so that they could question them.

Sims, 20, suffered a gunshot wound at around 12.25am, Baton Rouge police said in a news release.

He was taken to a hospital and died from his wounds, Sgt. Don Coppola Jr said.

The shooting happened at the Subway sandwich shop at 668 Harding Boulevard located across from Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium, The Advocate reported.

A witness told the station WAFB that he was near the Subway eatery overnight when heard a scuffle, followed by one or two gunshots.

Grief counselors have been made immediately available to teammates and friends at LSU.

LSU basketball coach Will Wade issued a statement saying the team is 'devastated' by Sim's violent death.

'We need your prayers for Wayde, for his family, for all of us. We are heartbroken,' Wade said.

Wade had praised the LSU junior for his offseason work earlier this week in a radio broadcast.

'Maybe the guy I've been most impressed with is Wayde Sims,' Wade said on 104.5 FM ESPN's 'Off the Bench.' 'Moving him around, we're trying to solve the issue of having a bigger 3-man, and really, the past month or couple of weeks we've messed around with him at the 3. He's done a really nice job.'

Sims was the 2014-15 Louisiana Gatorade player of the year at University High, where he led the Cubs to three straight state titles from 2014-16.

Wayde Sims' father, Wayne, also played forward on the LSU basketball team between 1987-1991.

No arrests have been reported. Police are asking anyone with information to call them.

Sims was entering his junior season at LSU. The A 6-foot-6 forward averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last year with 10 starts in 32 games.

'Wayde Sims’ loss is simply unbelievable to us right now,' said LSU vice chancellor and director of athletics Joe Alleva. 'There are no words that can express our sorrow for his parents and family. He was such a lovable young man who was full of joy.

'We are circling around his teammates and friends who need all the love and support we can give them. We are praying for his family, for his parents. God bless Wayde Sims.'

LSU President F. King Alexander also released a statement saying that Sims was a beloved member of the university community.

'To say we are grief-stricken is an understatement,' he said. 'I knew him personally and liked him tremendously. The void left by his passing will be immense, and we ask that you keep his family in your prayers.'

Anyone with information about the shooting or the identities of the men in the cellphone video is being asked to contact BRPD’s Violent Crimes Unit at 225-389-4869.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
