Refresh Dental Spa's Dr Kristina Cain (pictured) said an increasing number of people are turning to dentists for Botox
For most of us, we pay a trip to the dentist for a regular checkup - but more and more women are now flocking to clinics around Australia for a facial makeover.
An increasing number of patients are opting for anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers or even Botox to treat 'gummy smiles' while in the dental chair.
Refresh Dental Spa's Dr Kristina Cain, from Queensland, said dentists are becoming the go-to clinicians to treat painful or confidence zapping ailments with injectables like Botox.
'We're very good injectors, we are highly skilled in the anatomy of the face and we really understand the head and neck's functionality,' Dr Cain said.
'Botox has a big place in dentistry - it can help relieve chronic jaw pain, reduce problems such as grinding that can wear teeth away and dramatically improve gummy or asymmetrical smiles.
'A few years ago, dentistry and cosmetic injectables were a controversial mix but when you think about it logically, dentists are highly skilled at assessing the balance and overall aesthetics of the face.'
Before and after: The Brisbane dentist explained Botox works by relaxing the muscles in the upper lip, reducing its elevation and ultimately reducing the inhibiting 'gummy smile'
She explained more people are turning to their dentists to enquire about the insecurities they have with their mouth or face.
'Dentistry has really evolved as a profession, we can now treat patients in a much more holistic way and when they confide to us about insecurities they have about their mouth or face we are now well positioned to come up with a solution,' Dr Cain said.
'Everyone wants that perfect 'Hollywood' smile but if you're showing too much gum that can make a person feel very self-conscious.
'It can also be really effective in balancing out your face if you have an asymmetrical smile.'
The Brisbane dentist - who specialises in cosmetic enhancements - explained how Botox can be used to hide the inhibiting 'gummy smile'.
'An injectable like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin works by relaxing the muscle and preventing the top lip from being able to lift as high when smiling or can help to realign crooked lips,' she said.
'I had a patient who felt very self-conscious about her gummy smile but after an injectable muscle relaxing treatment she had more confidence at work and in her love life.
'Botox is also extremely effective in treating debilitating jaw pain from TMJ issues, it can assist by relaxing the masseter or temporalis muscle and for some it can bring immediate relief when other traditional treatments have failed.'
Dr Cain said dento-facial aesthetics are used to make the most out of other cosmetic dental treatments, so that wrinkles, fine lines or thin pursed lips do not distract from their smile
An increasing number of women are turning to dentists to get Botox while sitting in the chair
Dr Cain said there were many benefits of getting Botox at the dentist.
'Dento-facial aesthetics are used to make the most out of other cosmetic dental treatments, so that wrinkles, fine lines or thin pursed lips do not distract from their smile.
'I was at the first training sessions for dentists In Australia in 2011 and quickly saw the amazing therapeutic benefits of incorporating facial injectables into our practice.
'I don't think you need to be a psychologist to see that if a person feels more confident about their appearance it will flow into all areas of their life.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
