«Breaking News» Damning report claims drug and alcohol use by staff at Tottenham's delayed £850m stadium

A damning report has claimed that construction staff have been working while 'off their heads' on alcohol and drugs at Tottenham's new £850million stadium.

The north London club were originally due to take on Liverpool at their new home last weekend, but the huge project was subject to a further delayed due to issues with 'critical safety systems'.

However, an expose by Construction News alleges that the problems run much deeper, with some staff caught up in physical altercations and others 'drinking cans in the morning before snorting coke in the toilets'.

The new report claims that there has been 'chaos' on the building site and that confusion reigns among subcontractors who are being paid to deliver the state-of-the-art, 61,000 capacity ground.

Construction News also lay much of the blame on Tottenham's decision not to appoint an overall contractor, which has led to poor communication and mistakes.

The report claims that:

  • Workers have been drinking alcohol and even taking cocaine while on site

  • Fights broke out between some of the nearly 4,000 workers employed on the job

  • Electricians have been working in chaotic conditions and in some cases the same electrical work was done THREE times

  • Staff felt they were not provided with the right tools to complete their work

  • Vital materials were not available, meaning teams had to work with whatever supplies were available

  • Construction manager Mace became a 'toothless lion' due to Spurs' actions

Although the issues with drugs and alcohol have not been directly blamed for the project's delay, it is claimed that the site became unruly and fights broke out.

'I've not worked on a site like that in a long, long time,' a source told Construction News.

'There were people off their heads, drinking cans first thing in the morning before going on to site and snorting coke in the toilets.'

There is no suggestion that Mace, the construction management firm, were told of the behaviour of staff, or that they failed to act on information.

They operate a drugs and alcohol policy that includes random testing of own staff and those across its supply chain.

A Mace spokesperson told Sportsmail: 'Mace strongly refutes the image of our project painted by these anonymous allegations.

'The health, safety and wellbeing of everybody is, and has always been, a core value at Mace and any suggestion that our rigorous standards around best practise or drugs and alcohol had been broken would be taken extremely seriously.

'We carry out regular random drugs and alcohol testing to ensure that our rules are enforced throughout our supply chain. Any concerns about specific health and safety risks should have been flagged to Mace health and safety staff on the project.

'The new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is one of the UK's most complex and innovative projects. The club and the construction team are working diligently to complete the iconic stadium as soon as possible.

'Although these delays are obviously frustrating, once complete the new stadium is going to leave a fantastic, lasting legacy and will be a project everyone involved will be proud to be associated with.

'As you would expect, the number of operatives on site has reduced as sections of the stadium have begun to complete, in line with our programme.'

The report also argues that one of the key reasons behind the problems which have plagued the construction process is Spurs' decision make individual deals with subcontractors and appoint Mace to oversee the work.

It claims that the set-up has led to widespread confusion among workers, with teams focused only on completing their own tasks rather than working together.

A source told Construction News of one instance when electrics had to be ripped out twice so that an air-conditioning crew could finish their installation.

Another example of the lack of communication was when electricians arrived to connect some wiring, only to find that a ceiling had been installed which prevented them from completing the work.

'They are like a toothless lion, they have got no claws and no teeth,' a sourcetold Construction News.

'This situation is quite strange. [Mace] can only say, "This area is ready, could you please deploy someone and sort it out?"'.

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman said: 'We have always said that we would issue updates for test events and official opening as soon as we have confidence in our project managers' and contractors' ability to deliver against the revised scheduled of works.

'This remains the case and speculating on unsupported dates such as this is irresponsible.'

Paul Kavanagh, chief executive of Imtech, the stadium's largest electrical subcontractor, responded to the report: 'This is the fifth major stadium that Imtech has played a significant role in building, and we were selected on our proven ability to deliver these complex and difficult projects.

'All stadium projects are complicated and the Tottenham Hotspur project is, by any standards, a very large and complex one. The tight timescales and deadlines for completion of the works has added additional pressure to that which would normally come with a project of this scale.

'It is undoubtedly the case, given this scale and complexity, that some operational inefficiencies may have occurred in the course of the project. Imtech is not responsible for the delivery of all of the electrical scope, and we really do not recognise the comments that [CN] suggests are attributed to our work or processes. Our team have worked incredibly hard to deliver a world-class stadium.'

'We reject allegations of poor workmanship or lack of attention to the health and safety of our employees. Throughout this project, the health and safety of our employees, contractors and supply chain and the minimising of risks has been our principal concern, as our performance against our rigorous health and safety measures indicates.

'We are proud of our standards and the efforts and hard work that our employees, contractors and supply chain have delivered to get us to this point. We will continue to work with the club and Mace to deliver another world-class stadium. Our people who have worked on this project will be proud to have done so.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
