«Breaking News» Celtic 3-3 Liverpool: Honours even in thrilling charity contest

It started in the only way imaginable. You’ll Never Walk Alone, the stirring anthem synonymous with both of these legendary clubs, was sung with gusto by every man, woman and child in attendance at Celtic Park.

On a day when football united to throw its weight behind humanity’s ongoing battle with cancer, its inspiring words had never seemed more apt.

A Match for Cancer, the brainchild of Stiliyan Petrov and James Milner, was a reminder of the game’s capacity to shine light in dark places.

The healthy crowd which gathered in Glasgow’s East End certainly enjoyed seeing current and past stars of both clubs strut their stuff.

By full-time, the scoreboard showed a 3-3 draw - but that was of next to no importance. Charity was the winner here and that was all that mattered.

The flecks of Liverpool red in among the green and white in the stands spoke to the commitment of so many on Merseyside to this worthy cause.

On a day when football gave something back and then some, the list of names on show was truly extraordinary.

Shay Given, Henrik Larsson, Hristo Stoichkov, Robbie Keane, Artur Boruc and Johan Mjallby were among those turning out for Petrov’s side who had Brendan Rodgers as their manager.

Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, Jamie Redknapp, Owen Hargreaves and John Terry all in Milner’s selection. Jurgen Klopp was in the dug-out for them.

There was sprinkling of celebrity with Martin Compston and Calum Best in the ranks and plenty of scope for nostalgia for fans of both clubs.

Mjallby remains an imposing presence at the back at the age of 47, Larsson’s touch and vision are still other worldly while Keane, who’s currently squeezing the last pips out of his career with Indian side ATK, is still a joy to behold up front.

Milner’s men were no slouches either. As befits a man who won the World Cup and the Euros with Spain, Joan Capdevila is still an exceptional football despite now being the wrong side of 40, Dirk Kuyt’s snake hips are still in full working order while Luis Garcia only has to stand in a penalty box to unnerve defenders.

Despite the game being predictably half-paced, both sides produced enough moments of quality to keep a crowd of just under 20,000 regally entertained.

Garcia’s involvement led to Milner’s side taking an 11th minute lead. His shot was handled by Johan Mjallby and referee Craig Thomson pointed to the spot. Jeremy Lynch showed his freestyle skills on YouTube do translate to the real thing by hammering his spot-kick beyond Shay Given.

Petrov’s side levelled on 24 minutes. Hristo Stoichkov fed Ashley Young who put Robbie Keane through on goal with a deft flick. The Irish legend beat Joe Hart with a cool finish.

Milner’s men were back in front just two minutes later, though, when Spanish legend Capdevila bundled the ball home after a corner.

On 33 minutes, Petrov’s select squared the contest again. This time Larsson’s pass released Young. He skipped past Hart and knocked the ball into an empty net.

But the Reds re-established their lead nine minutes before the interval. Jason McAteer’s deep corner was poorly defended. Capdevila pounced for his second of the afternoon.

The only thing missing for the home support on the day was the traditional Larsson goal. The Swede did play his part in making it 3-3 midway through the second half though, squaring the ball to Gabby Agbonlahor for a tap-in.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
