«Breaking News» Unsolved death of a British teenager in Peking leads to heated feud between authors

The unsolved death of a British teenager who was brutally murdered and mutilated in China in 1937 has led to a feud between authors over the identity of the killer.

Paul French wrote about the death of 17-year-old Pamela Werner in his bestselling 2012 book Midnight in Peking - and blamed a US dentist and a former marine for her murder.

But now, in a new book titled A Death in Peking, retired detective Graeme Sheppard claims the true killer was Pamela's ex-boyfriend, a Chinese man named Han Shou-ch'ing.

Sheppard, who worked at Scotland Yard for three decades, was given French's book as a gift and was inspired to investigate the case for himself after finishing it.

The former detective said that while the 2012 book was 'a good read', the author 'did not do his homework'.

French defended his book and said that Sheppard was motivated by a family connection to one of the people linked to the investigation.

Sheppard's wife is the granddaughter of Nicholas Fitzmaurice, the coroner who ruled the identity of Pamela's killer was inconclusive.

Pamela, the daughter of a retired British consul and author, was struck over the head and murdered as she cycled home from an ice rink in the Chinese capital.

Her body was mutilated and her heart was cut out of her chest during the brutal killing.

Both authors relied heavily on 160 pages of correspondence compiled by Pamela's father, Edward Werner. The document is held by the National Archives at Kew.

Mr Werner decided to investigate his daughter's murder after police failed to find the culprit.

He concluded in his findings that the killing was committed by Wentworth Baldwin Prentice, an American dentist, and Joe Knauf, a former US marine suspected of being a drug dealer.

Paul French sided with Mr Werner in his book and speculated that the US duo - who frequently went hunting together - treated Pamela like a hunted animal.

However, Mr Sheppard thought Pamela's father was mentally ill. He told The Times: 'He had made all sorts of allegations. Midnight in Peking had cherry-picked some of them [and left out the wilder accusations].

'He accused everyone of being involved in the murder including the head of the Chinese police.'

Sheppard said Shou-ch'ing committed the murder and was the only suspect to disappear after Pamela's death.

The Chinese man was an ex of Pamela's and had come to blows with her disapproving father.

Shou-ch'ing had also been spotted at the skating rink three days before Pamela was found dead.

The most persuasive clue for Sheppard is that Pamela's heart was cut out and he claims that eating someone's heart is a 'little-known but genuine Chinese cultural love/hate practice'.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
