Extracts from the letters of former President George H.W Bush - who passed away on Friday - show a man devoted to his family and promising to 'be there... if you get a bad bounce in life' and unafraid of emotion.
The excerpt, from a letter to his children dated September 1998, is part of a series being released by Bush's presidential library for the first time following his passing at age 94.
In the absence of a memoir, the letters he wrote throughout his life and the diary he kept from age 18 provide the best insights into Bush's colorful life - touching on everything from family and love to aging and simple musings about life.

President George H.W. Bush, and his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, who were married for 73 years. Bush passed away on Friday - eight months after Barbara, and his presidential library is releasing a series of his unpublished letters to celebrate his life
In his 94 years Bush, as well as being the 41st President of the U.S, was a Navy pilot in World War II, an architect of the end of the cold war, director of the CIA and the chief American diplomat in China.
He is the subject of countless books, including those authored by his wife of 73 years Barbara and his fellow former President son George.
But while the 41st President has never told his own life story, the letters provide authentic, contemporary glimpses into his psyche in a way that a retrospective memoir perhaps could not have done.
Bush's 1988 letter to his children - the first of the series - says about aging: 'Last year there was only a tiny sense of time left, of sand running through the glass.'

The late president's letter reveals how he was 'viscerally involved' in all of his children's lives - and tells them how 'Bushes cry easily' when they are happy or sad
He continued: 'I want to put this aging on hold for a while now. I don't expect to be on the A-team anymore, but I want to play golf with you and I want to fish or throw shoes and I want to rejoice in your victories and I want to be there for you if you get a bad bounce in life and no doubt you will for the seas do indeed get rough.'
Bush and Barbara had six children: 43rd President George W. Bush, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, author Dorothy Bush Koch, businessmen Neil and Marvin Bush, and Robin, who died of leukemia at just three years old.
The late president's letter reveals how he was 'viscerally involved' in all their lives - and tells them how 'Bushes cry easily' when they are happy or sad.
'If I shed tears easier now, try not to laugh at me, because I'll lose more saline and that makes me feel like a sissy,' Bush wrote.
'And besides, it's okay to cry if you're a man, a happy man, me. All Bushes cry easily when we're happy or counting our blessings or sad.'
In his letter, Bush talks about living a happy life - an image complemented by the video made by his presidential library to accompany the release of the letter.
In the video, the former president and his family can be seen playing horseshoes, making snowballs, riding in a speedboat and dining at their estate in Kennebunkport, Maine.
'Remember the old song 'I'll Be There Ready When You Are,' Bush's letter continues.
'Well, I'll be there ready when you are where there is so much excitement ahead, so many grandkids to watch grow. If you need me, I'm here. Devotedly, Dad.'
Bush passed away at 10.10pm CT on Friday at his home in Houston, Texas, less than eight months after the death of his beloved wife Barbara. He was surrounded by his family.

The funeral will take place on Thursday at the Bush Library Center, and the White House said President Trump and first lady Melania plan to attend.
Former US first lady Michelle Obama also said she would attend, confirming on Sunday that she was canceling book tour visits to Paris and Berlin.
'It's important to me to join the Bush family in celebrating President George H.W. Bush's exemplary life,' she tweeted.
'This will unfortunately preclude my visits to Paris and Berlin. I've been deeply touched by the enthusiasm for my memoir, and I'm working to reschedule my trip for next year.'

The excerpt, from a letter to his children dated ...
It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
