«Breaking News» Doctor Who recap: Jodie Whittaker's debut season comes to an end with epic finale

Doctor Who's series finale saw one its most mysterious story arcs come full circle, after the TARDIS gang came face-to-face with Tzim-Sha again.

In an episode that was full of religious themes and false gods, Jodie Whittaker's Doctor faced her biggest threat yet, as the tooth-covered alien strove to wipe out all other planets... including the Earth.

The episode also gave fans their first glimpse of the upcoming New Year's Special, teasing a terrifying threat that has been hidden throughout history.

From the offset, the gang are drawn to the mysterious planet of Ranskoor Av Kolos, after nine different distress signals from the same point, as the Doctor, Yaz and Ryan were shielded from the mind-bending waves with neural blockers.

Quickly the group find a lone ship crew member Paltraki, whose memory has been erased and the crew kidnapped by this mystery force.

But it is soon revealed who our villain is, as a threatening transmission sees the TARDIS gang come face-to-face with Tzim-Sha (pronounced Tim Shaw) who brutally murdered Graham's wife and Ryan's nan Grace in the series premiere.

He has posed himself as a god to the religious nation of the Ux, who are using their powers of thought to manipulate the planet's waves/

This leads to a certain amount of conflict between the Doctor and Graham, as he makes a definitive vow to murder the creature should they come face-to-face.

But it is our Time Lady that has the first dramatic showdown with Tim Shaw, as he vows to enact revenge on her, by using the Ux's powers to destroy all other planets.

In what could easily be her best speech of the series yet, the Doctor brands Tim Shaw the false god for pretending to be such a religious figure - once again hinting at the extremism that has been laced throughout the series.

At risk: Tzim-Sha's plan saw him use the power of the Ux's almighty thoughts to wipe out all planets, making him a god

Embattled: The citizens of the religious driven planet were tricked into believing Tim Shaw was their god, forcing them to use their powers for his bidding

As the episode reaches a thrilling climax, the Doctor uses the power of the TARDIS - AND the Ux - to cut off the signals being used to Tim Shaw to wipe out planets.

It all culminates in a showdown that would have been right at home in the Western Saloon, as Graham - gun in hand - gets the opportunity to have his revenge.

But instead he is the better man, trapping the alien in a permenant alien, all the while paying homage to an action classic with the line: 'Yippee Ki Yay robots!'

As the show comes to a close, our gang - now called the Fam at last - are sent on their way for another adventure.

His last stand: Graham had the chance to get his revenge on Tim Shaw for killing Grace, but chose to be the better man and imprison him instead

It is an episode that seems to do little in regards to resolution, but for a series that had little ongoing plots there isn't many bows to tie up.

We then got our first look at the long-awaited New Year's special, as the Doctor tells the gang about the most dangerous threat in the universe, but is yet to reveal its name.

Many have been quick to assume it could be the iconic Daleks, but it seems that fans will have to wait and see.

Doctor Who returns on Tuesday 1st January at 7pm on BBC One.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
