«Breaking News» Corrie: Factory set to explode and kill off much loved character

Coronation Street is set for an explosive new year as the Underworld knicker factory will collapse killing of a much-loved character in scenes that will air in March.

Weatherfield will be rocked as locals discover what they think is an accident is actually the deliberate work of a new 'super-villain' -  an established character set to reveal themselves in the coming months.

Speaking at a press event on Monday, show boss Iain McLeod revealed: 'We're knocking the factory down in a colossal stunt and it will at first appear to be an accident and then be revealed to be some sort of criminal enterprise that caused it all to come down – and somebody will be dying in that collapse.

'It's a massive whodunnit which turns people against each other, and fractures the community.'

Anyone on the show could die off, with Sinead Barlow, Izzy Armstrong, Gina Seddon, Sean Tully, among the fan favourites who might be leaving the show.

Others contenders perhaps fated to meet their demise include Beth and Kirk Sutherland.

Shocking: The scenes will see Weatherfield rocked as the explosion will be the deliberate work of a new 'super-villain' set to join the show in the coming months

The scenes are set to be real tearjerkers, with McLeod saying there won't be a dry eye in the house after the emotional episodes air.

'The week itself is dramatic and the death is heartbreaking and very well written - there won't be a dry eye in the house' he said.

'The event – which sees many regulars running for their lives - will have an enormous impact for months afterwards.

'It's is a whodunnit without a murder at the centre – instead it's gross negligence manslaughter.

'It'll be every bit as intriguing. We'll start with the crime and then gradually reveal the motives afterwards.

'Obviously everybody's out of a job temporarily, there'll be lots of financial and lifestyle stories that spin off from that point. It will have ripples which will extend into the next six or 12 months.'

McLeod added they'll be a special set made to see the collapse, and 2019 will see a 'new villainous presence on the cobbles'.

He said: 'No one flicks a switch in this character's head that makes them bad. It happens organically through desperation and through corruption of their original intentions.

'It's about small choices that can force you into a role that you never saw for yourself.

'The commissioning editor, Hugh, said "it's like the Godfather". I would never presume to ever compare what we do with one of the greatest films of all time but in terms of the genesis of those characters, it has some similarities.'

But there's some solace for Corrie fans, as McLeod revealed writers resisted the urge to kill off 'most of the cast'.

He said: 'As a producer you sit and think "maybe we could kill them and them and them..." but we'd have no cast left. So restricting the body count was a good thing, as was making it somebody that we care about.'

The new villain, who is already a well-established character, will be different to villains such as Pat Phelan or Richard Hillman, McLeod said. 'Corrie can have baddies who come in, burn bright and then are gone, but also a more long-range type, like Mike Baldwin, who is ruthless and self-serving and rides roughshod over everybody' he said.

Carla Connor, who is played by Alison King, will be caught up in the fallout as the boss of the business. Her storyline see her getting the blame from many locals over the collapse - and death.

The enormity of the situation gets to her and affects her mental health. 'We'll do a standalone episode which will focus on Carla's mental health, which reveals to the audience who is behind the collapse of the factory roof,' McLeod revealed.

Underworld has become notorious in the soap for being the location for a string of disasters, deaths and dramatic storylines.

The factory was destroyed by a fire started by Tony in 2010 but eventually re-opened. A month after the fire, John Stape buried his old work colleague Colin Fishwick under the factory floor after stealing his identity.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
