«Breaking News» American armoured warship was destroyed by a German U-boat's sea mine

A German U-boat's sea mine was responsible for the sinking of the USS San Diego which perished in World War One.

The vessel was long suspected to have been destroyed by the German submarine and new evidence has now backed up this theory.

Six people lost their lives when the ship went under, but the rest of the 1,117 strong crew survived the ordeal.

The 500-foot long armoured vessel was destroyed in just 28 minutes and remains in tact under 110 feet of water off the coast of Fife Island, New York.

Dr Alexis Catsambis, a maritime archaeologist from the Archaeological Institute of America, presented his findings at a research summit in Washington.

German submarine U-156 has long been suspected as the responsible party but the method of its destruction has remained a mystery for more than a century.

3D images collected by an autonomous underwater vehicle allowed researchers to find the spot of the blast to discover its cause.

Analysis revealed the gaping hole was too big to have been caused by an internal explosion - such as deliberate sabotage or a coal-powdered blast.

It is also claimed the aperture of the blast is not big enough for it to have been a torpedo strike and the tell tale bubbles that follow the projectile were not seen by 17 recorded eye-witnesses.

The researchers concluded the most likely explanation was either a T1 or a T2 torpedo tube mine.

Simulations re-created how the mine impacted life on the ship and found that it took only two minutes for the region of impact to become flooded.

Ten minutes post explosion saw the ship on its side and water flooding the gun deck.

'The format of the 3D modeling data makes analysis readily comparable,' said Ken Nahshon, PhD, of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division in a statement.

'Before we started this, I wasn't familiar with the ability to do this underwater; above the water we do it all the time, but below water collecting 3D data is a challenge.

'I've learned that the sheer amount of expertise that's needed to interpret it is a credit to the advances of technology in sea floor mapping.'

It is believed the armoured shell of the ship is acting like a 'girdle' and keeping the rotting carcass of the ship contained.

WHAT WAS THE USS SAN DIEGO?

The USS San Diego was a 500-foot long armoured vessel which was built in 1904.

It was originally called the USS California (ACR-6) and renamed the San Diego in 1914 for World War One.

It sunk on July 18, 1918 when it was attacked off the coast of New York by a German U-boat.

A mine struck the hull of the vessel and it was completely submerged  only 28 minutes later.

It is now mostly intact but upside down under 110 feet of water.

'The legacy of the incident is that six men lost their lives on July 18, 1918,' said Catsambis in a statement obtained by Fox News

'With this project we had an opportunity to set the story straight and by doing so, honour their memory and also validate the fact that the men on-board did everything right in the lead up to the attack as well as in the response.

'The fact that we lost six men out of upwards of 1,100 is a testament to how well they responded to the attack.'

U-156 is thought to be the responsible party as records place it in the vicinity of the USS San Diego at the time.

On July 22 1918, a few days after the demise of USS San Diego, it executed the sole attack on the US mainland of the war when it attacked some Massachusetts based tugboats.

The submarine hit a U minefield in the North Atlantic and sank before the war ended and has never been located.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
