A St Louis newscaster has apologized for saying 'Martin Luther C**n Jr.' while on air, just weeks after a meteorologist was fired for making the same racial slur.

KTVI's Kevin Steincross made the gaffe at 5am on Thursday morning while he was doing a segment on St. Louis University honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The term is a racial slur that has been used against African American people.

Realizing his mistake, he apologized to viewers when he faced the camera again at 9am.

He said: 'We have heard from a viewer about a mistake I made in our 5 am. newscast.

'In our story about the tribute to Dr. King, I unfortunately mispronounced his name.

'Please know I have total respect for Dr. King, what he meant and what he continues to mean to our country. This was not intentional in any way and I sincerely apologize'.

A representative for Tribune Broadcasting told DailyMail.com that Steincross is extremely upset by the mistake and it regrets it deeply.

The representative added: 'The Fox2 management team spoke to Kevin following the mistake and we believe that it was truly inadvertent and does not reflect Kevin’s core beliefs.

'We do not believe additional disciplinary measures are necessary'.

The representative claimed the mistake was 'very unfortunate and inadvertent' and that the newscaster quickly apologized to viewers on-air.

The episode marks the latest in a series of broadcasters making the same mispronunciation of King's name, sparking debates as to whether they revealed racism or were genuine mistakes.

Earlier this month, New York meteorologist Jeremy Kappell was fired after he gave a weather update in at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park in Rochester.

Steincross later apologized on-air saying he made a mistake and had 'total respect for Dr King'. Tribune Broadcasting said Steincross was upset by his actions, and insisted that no more disciplinary action was needed

He claimed that it looked gray at 'Martin Luther C**n King Jr. Park', appearing to stumble over the name.

Three days later, News10NBC's general manager announced that Kappell no longer worked for the station.

Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren had called for his dismissal, saying it was 'wrong, hurtful and infuriating' that the term was broadcast.

'It is beyond unacceptable that this occurred. There must be real consequences for the news personality involved and also for the management team that failed to immediately apologize and address the slur,' he said.

However NBC weatherman and personality Al Roker tweeted in defense of Kappell. Roker, who is black, said on Twitter on Wednesday that Kappell flubbed a line and should be given the chance to apologize on WHEC.

'Anyone who has done live tv and screwed up (google any number of ones I've done understands,'  he tweeted.

Kappell has apologized and explained himself multiple times , notably during a four-minute video on Facebook in which he speaks to the camera with his wife by his side.

'Unfortunately I spoke a little too fast when I was referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he said, 'so fast to the point where I jumbled a couple of words'.

He ended the video with a request for viewers to 'please, hold back your judgment'.

In 2013, San Antonio meteorologist Mike Hernandez apologized for using the 'c**n term while referencing Martin Luther King Jr. Day during KABB FOX 29's morning broadcast.

The station issued an apology via their Facebook page and Hernandez later said he was sorry for the mispronunciation.

He told the San Antonio Express-News: 'It was absolutely a slip of the tongue, he said. 'I would never ever, ever say anything like that intentionally. It just came out'.

ESPN sports talk-show host Mike Greenberg same  phrase came nine years ago and he kept his job.

He and co-host on the 'Mike & Mike' radio show were 'talking football with you on this Martin Luther c**n King Jr. holiday' on air. He apologized and was not fired.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
