«Breaking News» Top British jail in lockdown as inmates steal THREE five-inch knives left lying around by workmen

Three knives with five-inch blades were stolen by prisoners after being left discarded on the floor by workmen refurbishing one of Britain's most secure jails.

The knives were used to cut away pieces of linoleum flooring that was being fitted in A Wing at High-security HMP Wayland in Norfolk on Wednesday afternoon.

Prison officers failed to spot them lying around unattended and were horrified when contractors later reported them missing.

News of the security lapse came on the same day as government figures showed violence and self-harm in prisons is at a record high.

The jail was placed on lockdown while officers desperately searched for the tools fearing they could be used in a prison stabbing.

The knives were eventually all recovered five hours later. A well-placed source said that two of the knives were located on B Wing.

The source said: 'It doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened. It's bad enough not spotting one knife left unattended but three!

'Those knives are used to cut through thick Lino flooring and the way the blades are curved means they could do a lot of damage.’

The source went on: 'Violence in prisons is a serious problem at the moment so these knives could have fallen into the hands of someone who wanted to harm another inmate.

'Two of the knives were found on another wing. Security will no doubt be ramped up but it was astonishingly negligent of staff.'

HMP Wayland, near Thetford, is a Category C prison, and is where Reggie Kray was held before his release in 2000.

The Westminster Bridge terrorist, Khalid Masood, also spent two years there.

Other notable former inmates include anarchist Charlie Gilmour, stepson of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and Jeffrey Archer who wrote a book about his experiences called Prison Diary 2: Wayland - Purgatory.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: 'These items were quickly recovered and prisoners engaging in this kind of behaviour can expect punishment.

'The prison will be reminding its contractors of the importance of securing their equipment.'

HMP Wayland has a history of violence and saw four deaths in custody in 2015.

In August 2016 the prison governor, Paul Cawkwell, was severely beaten by an inmate in the canteen.

And only last month concerns were raised over staffing levels and violence at The prison in the Independent Monitoring Board's annual report.

The board said it was concerned at the number of violent incidents that have occurred at the Jail, which houses 1,000 inmates, and that almost half of staff are in their first year of service.

It added that 20 of 72 new officers recruited during 2017/18 left in less than a year.

In the latest incident, three fire engines, police and ambulance services were called on January 4 following reports of a fire in a cell, which was extinguished before arrival.

No serious injuries were received.

The Prison Officers Association declined to comment on the forgotten knives, citing that an internal investigation may now be launched to see if there is a case of negligence to answer.

Figures released by the Ministry of Justice show violence and self-harm in prisons are 'unacceptably high'.

Justice minister David Gauke acknowledged the latest official safety in custody statistics were 'disturbing' after they showed increases across all of the key categories.

In the year to September, there were 33,803 assault incidents, up 20% on the previous 12 months.

Of those, nearly 4,000 were recorded as 'serious' - such as those which require medical treatment or result in fractures, burns, or extensive bruising.

Assaults on staff also continue to rise, reaching record highs.

They increased by 29% year on year, to 10,085, including 997 which were serious, although the Ministry of Justice said a change in the way these figures are recorded may have contributed to the jump.

There were 52,814 self-harm incidents, a 23% increase, and a new record high, according to the MoJ's report.

It also revealed there were 325 deaths in prison custody in the 12 months to December 2018, up 10% from the previous year. Of these, four were homicides.

Mr Gauke said: 'Violence and self-harm in our prisons is unacceptably high and these figures underline why we are spending an extra £70m to fight the drugs plaguing prisons and boost security, while also training over 4,000 new prison officers in handling the complex offender population.

'Clearly there is a huge amount yet to be done but I am determined to cut the violence so prisons can focus on rehabilitating the offenders who will be back out at some point.

'And while these figures are disturbing, I am optimistic that the measures we have been putting in place will help us to reduce violence and ultimately better protect the public.'

Shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon claimed cuts to staff and budgets were 'directly to blame for violence spiralling out of control in our prisons'.

He said: 'Our prisons have become a danger to officers, inmates and wider society.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
