«Breaking News» M&S protest in Felixstowe, Suffolk, over closure of shop

Furious shoppers have taken to the streets to protest the closure of their local Marks & Spencer shop described as the 'heartbeat' of their town.

Around 40 people stood outside the supermarket in Felixstowe, Suffolk, in the rain and more than 3,200 people have signed an online petition to save the store.

Locals have described the shop in the seaside town as a 'lifeline' for older people and said its closure would be 'devastating' on the community.

The Felixstowe shop is one of 17 stores set to close in the coming months as M&S commits to its plan to shut more than 100 by 2022.

Mike Titchener, chairman of the Felixstowe Town Centre Residents Association, told the BBC: 'It's always a really busy store, it's the flagship store of the high street, it's the heartbeat of the town.

'The demographic of Felixstowe is elderly. It's a lifeline for them. If we lose it, it will be devastating.'

Shoppers will need to travel 10 miles to nearest M&S once the closure goes ahead - which locals say is 'too far', especially for those who can't drive.

An M&S spokeswoman said: 'Proposing to close stores is never easy, for our colleagues, customers or the local community, but it is vital for the future of M&S.'

Therese Coffey, MP for Suffolk Coastal, said she would urge M&S bosses to keep the shop open when she meets them in Parliament next week.

The 16 other stores set to to close are: Ashford, Barrow, Bedford, Boston, Buxton, Cwmbran, Deal, Huddersfield, Hull, Junction One Antrim Outlet, Luton Arndale, Newark, Northwich, Rotherham, Sutton Coldfield and Weston-super-Mare.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
