«Breaking News» Frank DeCaro slams Kevin Hart's 'botched' apology in Oscars controversy

Leading comic and gay rights activist Frank DeCaro has blasted Kevin Hart for his disastrous Oscars fallout with the LGBTQ+ community - and the Academy bosses for failing to replace him.

The former Daily Show contributor weighed in on the controversy during a red carpet appearance at the Dorian Awards in Los Angeles last Tuesday where he acted as host.

In an interview with DailyMailTV, DeCaro admitted that the problem is not so much the Academy's 'mistake' as is the way Hart is handling the situation.

'The real problem was the apology stank,' DeCaro said. 'What he said was terrible. If he had owned it, I think people would have been a little more forgiving.'

'It would have been much better if Kevin Hart's apology had been a true apology. "I am sorry you were offended" is not an apology. They will teach you that the first day of therapy.'

Hart, 39, was forced to step down from hosting the upcoming 91st Annual Academy Awards last month after a series of old homophobic tweets resurfaced.

Hart attempts to apologize, however, have sparked further backlash from members of the LGBTQ community who perceived his remarks as insincere.

DeCaro admitted that Hart could have survived the fallout had his comments been clever rather than just inappropriate and 'mean.'

'If it had been funny it might have gotten a pass. But it wasn't funny, it was kind of mean. If it was mean and really funny you can kind of get away with almost anything.

'If you are are joking you can get away with murder. I think people listen if you are funny,' DeCaro added.

In a now-deleted tweet from 2011, Hart showed off his anti-gay humor saying: 'Yo if my son comes home & try's (sic) 2 play with my daughters doll house I'm going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice "stop that's gay."'

DeCaro also mocked 'Pope Ellen' DeGeneres, who he believes exacerbated the drama by supporting Hart and suggesting the Academy should reinstate him as host earlier this month.

'Pope Ellen - wants him to [host]. So she has absolved him of all guilt on her end of it. It was another botched attempt.

'Every day with that - can you think of new ways to make this worse? It was like, leave it alone. Maybe next year will be his time if they had left it alone. No, everyone has to keep talking and everyone has to get involved. It gets worse.

'I was like why are you doing this, when she got involved. Leave it alone. We are onto the next thing already. We have moved on and apparently she had not.

DeCaro also said he believed Hart began to dig his own grave in the aftermath of the tweets when he rejected the idea of being an ally for the LGBTQ community.

Hart made the comment in reference to CNN host Don Lemon questioning his apology, Hart reacted: 'I don't like the forcing… Don Lemon goes on CNN and he's like, 'You can fix this, become an ally.' That's not my...it's not my life dream,'

DeCaro weighed in: 'When you double down and say my life's goal is not be an LGBTQ ally, I don't think you are doing so much to help yourself. You are digging a hole and it gets deeper and deeper.

'Comedians are self-destructive, and it is like, "dude, stop saying stuff that was worse than what you said yesterday," because everyone is only going to get more angry.'

DeCaro also criticized the Academy's failure to find a new host since Hart stepped down.

'There are 10,000 people in a 20-mile radius of me who could do that job; there are 1,000 who could do it well, and there are a 100 A-listers who could do it really well.

'So don't tell me you can't find someone; I am sorry that is a load of baloney. There is no way they couldn't have found someone who was hilariously funny, totally smart and was not going to upset anyone. So, I don't buy it was Kevin Hart or no one.

'One has to find someone to walk that line between provocative and not ruffling too many feathers. But you don't want someone who is totally boring either, otherwise you'd sit there and play on your phone during the award show instead of actually watching.'

He added that Hart's controversy may make comics think about their words: 'It is not the worse thing that people are considering their words before they say them - I do and it has not made me any less funny. You do think is it a good enough joke for how naughty it is? It keeps us on our toes.'

DeCaro believes the controversy surrounding the Oscars will be old news once the event rolls around.

'I think when people show up on the red carpet in gorgeous dresses and beautiful tuxedos no one is even gonna think about it, unless someone brings it up.

'There are bigger fish to fry than that.'

DeCaro oversaw the awards from GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, comprised of over 200 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally entertainment journalists in the US, Canada, Australia and UK, honoring the best in film and television.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
