«Breaking News» BuzzFeed UK is cutting almost half of all editorial roles

BuzzFeed is to axe almost half its UK editorial team days after it cut 250 jobs in the US, it was revealed today.

The news and entertainment website's London base is being restructured with 17 of its 37 writers and illustrators set to be made redundant.

The majority of the job losses will land in its 'Buzz team', whose journalists produce the listicle and quiz content the website initially became known for.

There will also be cuts to its teams covering news, entertainment as well as its illustrations and essays sections.

Ten days ago its UK editor-in-chief Janine Gibson left amid speculation that the company was facing major budget problems.

A spokesman for BuzzFeed confirmed there would be job cuts but said that the numbers, tweeted out by their own London staff, are not yet set in stone.

She said: 'Our proposed news unit in the UK will continue to do impactful journalism across social justice, politics and social news.

'The biggest loss to our team will be in the core Buzz unit, however we will maintain some celebrity content creators'.

The redundancies came days after BuzzFeed's US operation also shrank.

Last week it was announced that bosses would cut about 15 per cent of their American workforce, resulting in 250 layoffs.

The group slashed their national news, national security and health sections.

BuzzFeed founder and CEO Jonah Peretti said in a leaked memo: 'This experience is heartbreaking for everyone involved. We had people up until 4am last night trying to accelerate the process and meet with as many people as possible before the weekend.

He added: 'I wish this wasn’t the case but it is. I know this is resulting in additional anxiety and stress, we are trying to mitigate as much as possible. It really sucks and I’m sorry'.

Peretti is involved in a major row with his US staff, which could spread to the UK.

There is now a battle between BuzzFeed staff who fear that sacked staff will not be paid for the holiday they have accrued.

A letter from BuzzFeed's staff blasted the handling of the job cuts by management.

It said: 'Every aspect of the way that these layoffs have been handled so far — from communication to execution to aftermath — has been deeply upsetting and disturbing, and it will take a long time to repair the damage that has been done to our trust in this company'.

It said that settling the bill for unpaid time off is the 'only justifiable choice for a company that has always prided itself on treating its employees well'.

Earlier last week US media giant Verizon announced it would cut seven percent of staff in its Media Group which includes HuffPost, Yahoo and AOL, reportedly resulting in the about 800 layoffs.

President Trump was accused of gloating over the loss of hundreds of jobs for reporters, editors, and media workers.

On Saturday President Trump tweeted that news outlets like BuzzFeed and HuffPost announced layoffs because they are 'Fake News and bad journalism', even though the cuts are blamed on advertising sales

He tweeted on Saturday: 'Ax falls quickly at BuzzFeed and Huffpost! Headline, New York Post. Fake News and bad journalism have caused a big downturn. Sadly, many others will follow. The people want the Truth!'

Despite Trump's claims that the outlets cut employees due to 'bad journalism', the real reason lies in declining advertising numbers.

The reason for the cuts is declining digital advertising sales as tech giants Facebook and Google monopolize digital ads and block news sites from cashing in on that revenue with their changing algorithms.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
