However, after its dramatic yet open-ended finale on Saturday, viewers were left with the hope of another installment of the gripping tale.

Earlier this month a BBC spokesperson confirmed that the first episode of Baptiste had reached 4.6 million viewers which equated to 23.9 per cent of the overall audience.

The drama's creators and brothers Jack and Harry Williams recently described their hopes for another series.

The told Express.co.uk: 'We definitely want to do more Baptiste.

'I think in writing [Baptiste] we had some ideas about where he might go and in future series, we’ll tell a complete trilogy.

'This is the beginning with a bigger arc for Julien and new characters. Yes, I think this is where he lives now.'

During the series finale, fans were treated to a dramatic ending which saw the detective's own son turn on him and hold a gun to his mother's head.

The gripping tale came to a close with French detective Julian Baptiste changing his mind about his decision to retire.

Earlier during the series, fans were also left reeling after it was revealed Niels Horchner was the secret lovechild of the detective and his ex-girlfriend and police chief Martha Horchner during an explosive episode.

While the heart-pumping drama has achieved much success, it was unable to beat record breaking figures of The Bodyguard in 2018 which hit a whopping 10.4 million viewers on the weekend it launched.

Now with Baptiste's show creators hinting to a new lease of life for the French detective, avid fans can now watch out for the saga to return to their screens.

MailOnline has contacted the BBC for comment.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
