«Breaking News» Spanish court clears group of five men of gang-raping 18-year-old woman

A Spanish court on Wednesday upheld a controversial ruling that cleared five men of gang-raping an 18-year-old woman during Pamplona's famous bull-running San Fermin festival back in 2016.

The case has sparked protests across Spain over chauvinism and sexual abuse against women.

The judge at a court in Navarra confirmed nine-year prison sentences for the men - who called themselves 'The Wolf Pack' and joked about the 2016 incident in a Whatsapp group - for the lesser crime of sexual assault.

The five men, who called themselves 'The Wolf Pack' joked about the 2016 assault in a Whatsapp group message, but the Spanish courts could not convict them of raping the 18-year-old woman because of a lack of physical evidence of violence

The state prosecutor had originally asked for sentences of more than 20 years each for rape, which in Spain requires a plaintiff to present evidence of specific violence, such as being threatened with a knife or dealt physical blows.

But due to a technicality under Spanish law - which demands specific physical evidence to be present - the men could not be convicted of rape, even though the court ruling agreed that the five had assaulted the woman in the doorway of a residential building and recorded it on their mobile phones.

The case, has attracted widespread international attention in light of the global #MeToo movement that has catapulted sexual abuse and mistreatment of women into the spotlight, occurred during the annual San Fermin bull-running festival in the Navarran capital Pamplona.

The San Fermin festival is famous for its drunken revelry but concern has grown over increased reports of sex attacks at the event, as well as over the mistreatment of women in general in Spain.

Thousands of people have flooded the streets of Spain to protest against the court's ruling, with chants of 'I believe you sister' in an effort to highlight the need to take effective measures to educate and make judges in Spain more aware of the prevalence of chauvinism in society and the courts.

'(The ruling) is an embarrassment that shows that male chauvinism is well established in the courts and we must take measures, measures that must educate judges because woman can't continue to live in fear,' the leader of the far-left Podemos party, Pablo Iglesias, said in an interview with state broadcaster TVE on Wednesday.

The ruling, which can now be appealed in the Supreme Court, saw the men released on bail in June on a legal technicality that says no one can be held for more than two years without a definitive sentence being handed down.

All five men, who include a former policeman and a former soldier, paid £5,334 (6,000 euros) in bail though their release led to further protests and concern across the political spectrum with pledges to revise the justice system's response to such charges.

The judge...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
