The Port Authority has moved its decorations, placed over the letters on the Holland Tunnel's sign, after complaints the off-center displays were triggering their OCD - and were just plain ugly.
Three wreaths have adorned the New York bound entrance to the heavily used tunnel around the holidays for decades. On Monday night, they were moved from their off-putting positioning.
Some were upset by the configuration in which wreaths covered the letters 'O' and 'U' on the entrance sign and a tree-shaped decoration covered the letter 'N' in 'HOLLAND.'
The tree shaped decoration would fit more snugly over the 'A,' several people said.
BEFORE, an OCD nightmare?: The Christmas shaped tree wreath over the 'N' became the focal point over Port Authority's monthly board meeting, which prompted them to poll commuters
AFTER, a Christmas miracle: Over 21,000 commuters voiced their opinion on the matter which saw the second O-shaped wreath removed, and the tree shaped wreath that stood over the 'N' to its new, more snug location over the A
The Port Authority, which operates the tunnel, listened to the complaints and took a poll after Manhattan resident Cory Windelspecht, the man who has been the public face of the push to move the decorations, addressed the board last week.
'The only reason we are here today is that we spoke loudly,' he told board members during their monthly meeting on Thursday. 'We just wanted to get noticed.'
The announcement by Windelspecht was made during a day when the Port Authority approved an $8.5billion budget and celebrated record traffic at its ports and airports in 2018.
Yet, most of the questions after its monthly board meeting focused on the tunnel's decorations.
Windelspecht said he travels through the tunnel several times a week as part of his job in medical sales and that he has been irked by the sign for several years because of the placement of the tree decoration over the 'N.'
As the votes for the poll came in, Executive Director Rick Cotton told the press 'change is in the air.'
'In light of the interest and in light of the proposal for change, we thought it was important to listen and take action, and what we're doing is quite straightforward,' Cotton said. 'We intend to act based on the results [of the poll].'
Cotton added that a design competition would be considered for next year.
Some motorists had specifically complained the design could possibly be a trigger for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
In a tongue and cheek press release, the Port Authority announced the poll for the direction of how the wreaths' placement should be changed last week.
The press release mimicked the Charles Dickens poem that begins, ''Twas the night before Christmas.'
More than 21,000 people voted in the poll, with the numbers released Monday.
A Christmas hero: After a Manhattanite Cory Windelspecht (pictured) complained during the Port Authority's monthly board meeting, the shift in focus went from the discussion of travels over PA's tunnels, bridges and airports, and the its new budget to the holiday decorations at the Holland Tunnel
Commuters took to social media and shared their holiday cheer after the decision was made, yet some still felt the Port Authority could do a better decorating job next year
The Port Authority had a little fun announcing the poll for commuters with a 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' themed press release
The consensus? Move the tree from over the 'N' in 'HOLLAND' to over the 'A,' and remove a wreath hanging over the 'U,' while leaving the O-shaped wreath over the 'O' in its place.
By Monday night, the wreaths had been moved accordingly.
The 'lesson to this tale,' NPR queried, 'There can be great strength in shared irritation.'
That proposal garnered about 42 per cent of the votes, about 1,200 more than an option that would have moved the tree but kept the second wreath where it was.
The completely removed O-shaped wreath will head to the Journal Square PATH station.
For a better outlook on all the hullabaloo on moving the wreaths around, not only did distressed commuters get what they want, it cost the Port Authority nothing to get the job done to make the commute a little more cheery for motorists.
Port Authority Spokesman Steve Coleman tells DailyMail.com that moving the signs around did not eat into their budget.
'We use the same frames for the wreaths every year. We add in the greenery, which is a nominal cost. The work to install them is done during straight time for our maintenance workers, as was the case last night. There was no cost to move them.'
More than one million vehicles pass through the 91-year-old Holland Tunnel monthly, according to Port Authority statistics.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
