Yukai Yang, a Chinese national, charged with attempted murder is accused of trying to get himself deported to flee jurisdiction
A former chemistry student at Lehigh University charged with slowly poisoning his black roommate and intimidating him with racist graffiti is accused of attempting to flee jurisdiction and a possible second poisoning attempt.
The family of Chinese national Yukai Yang, 22, posted his $200,000 bail last week, and he was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when he tried to let himself be deported, The Morning Call reported.
'He informed them he was going to waive deportation, which meant he was going to get on a plane and go home,' said Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.
Morganelli also gave confirmation that the district attorney's office was looking into allegations of Yang's possible involvement in the poisoning of a second Lehigh University student.
'That is in the early stages of investigation. It came to light essentially after the publication of these charges,' said the district attorney.
ICE returned Yang to the Northampton County Jail at the request of the district attorney's office who had been given a heads up about Yang's attempt to leave the country, according to The Morning Call.
Juwan Royal, shown, was Yukai Yang's roommate for several years, and was shocked to learn he was being poisoned over time
Yang is no longer enrolled at Lehigh (pictured) and his student visa was revoked leading to the deportation proceeding
'Mr. Yang thought that because he is a foreign national, now here illegally in that his student visa has been revoked, that he could post bail, waive his right to a deportation hearing and abscond,' wrote District Morganelli in a statement. 'That will not happen.'
Believed to be a 'legitimate flight risk,' prosecutors are asking a judge to keep Yang locked up without bail.
Yang was charged on December 20 with attempted homicide and related offenses in addition to a previous charge in April of racial intimidation.
He had allegedly scrawled the N-word and 'GET OUT OF HERE' in marker on his roommate's desk and vandalized Royal's bed and television, leading to the poisoning investigation.
Despite treatment, authorities say Juwan Royal still suffers from the thallium poisoning inflicted by his former roommate
Authorities say Yang sickened his roommate over time by adding thallium to his roommate's mouthwash, food and drinks this past spring.
His roommate of several years, Juwan Royal, experienced symptoms that included dizziness, shaking and vomiting.
A blood test later found Royal positive for thallium, an ingredient formerly used in rat poison and now banned in the US.
'Initially, Mr. Royal was dumbfounded by this as everyone else, because he believed they had a fairly cordial relationship as roommates,' Assistant District Attorney Abe Kassis said.
Royal, who graduated in the spring, was immediately treated for poisoning, but prosecutors say he still suffers physical effects from the poisoning.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
