«Breaking News» Dua Lipa and Jess Glynne are the female acts topping the UK charts the most

It’s been a year in which women across the entertainment industry have joined together to help stamp out gender inequality.

And it certainly seems to have paid off in the UK music charts as the gender gap between those artists who spent the most time in the top 40 disappeared almost entirely in 2018.

Thanks to the success of musicians such as Dua Lipa, 23, and Jess Glynne, 29, 49 per cent of the tracks that spent the most time in the charts featured female vocalists this year, compared to just 35 per cent in 2017.

Female artists spent 310 weeks in the top 40 in total, which is not far behind the 328 weeks achieved by male artists.

Rapper Cardi B, 26, spent the most time out of any female artist, in the UK charts this year, having clocked up an impressive 77 weeks with tracks including Girls Like You and I Like It.

Dua spent the second longest in the charts with 67 weeks, followed by Jess on 59 weeks and Ariana Grande, 25, on 58.

Drake, 32, is the artist who spent the most time in the UK charts this year, with his songs clocking up a total of 102 weeks inside the top 40.

The rapper also achieved the most number one singles of the year with God’s Plan in February, Nice For What in April and In My Feeling in July.

Back in 2017, songs by male artists dominated the charts with over 59 per cent thanks to the success of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.

Jess Glynne broke the record for the most number one singles by a British female soloist this year, surpassing Cheryl, with whom she had previously been tied.

In March, she topped the chart with Rudimental, Macklemore and Dan Caplen on These Days and then in June she hit the top spot with I’ll Be There.

The fastest-selling album of 2018 was Take That’s reimagined greatest hits Odyssey, which had a combined sales of 106,000 in its first week.

At the beginning of 2018, Grammys producer Neil Portnow came under fire for responding to the lack of female nominees at this year’s ceremony by telling women to ‘step up.’

Alessia Cara was the only standalone female artist to win a Grammy in the Best New Artist category, prompting an outcry from across the industry.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
