Paul McCowns says he went to cash his first check from a new job and was turned away at the bank and arrested outside. He says he was racially profiled
A Cleveland man says he was the victim of racial profiling when he went to cash his first check from a new job at a bank, but instead was turned away only to be arrested outside.
Paul McCowns spoke to Cleveland 19 and explained he had been working for an electrical company for about three weeks when he went into a Brooklyn branch of Huntington Bank to cash his first check which was for about $1,000.
'I had got a new job. I worked there for about three weeks,' he said adding that when he walked in he was asked for two forms of identification which he provided.
He was also asked to provide a fingerprint, something that non-Huntington customers who wish to cash checks need to provide per the bank's policy.
The teller next tried to call his employer to confirm his employment.
'They tried to call my employer numerous times. He never picked up the phone,' he said.
McCowns says during the fruitless calls to his employer the bank employees started looking at the computer screen and questioning the transaction.
They told him they were unable to cash his check, so McCowans left the bank.
'I get in my truck and the squad car pull in front of me and he says get out the car,' McCowns said.
Unbeknownst to him, one of the bank's employees had called 911 and reported him to police.
According to a transcript of the 911 call obtained by Cleveland 19, the bank employee tells the dispatcher, 'He's trying to cash a check and the check is fraudulent. It does not match our records.'
The dispatcher then asks the bank employee: 'Does he know you called 911?'
The teller responds: 'No.'
Police handcuffed and placed McCowns into the Brooklyn Police cruiser.
However, within minutes of being handcuffed, police were able to get a hold of his employer who confirmed the check was real and that McCowns is indeed an employee.
'My employer said yes he works for me. He just started and yes, my payroll company does pay him that much,' McCowns explained.

The check (stub pictured) he was trying to cash was for around $1,000. He was denied from cashing it when the bank tellers could not get a hold of his employer
McCowns believes he was racially profiled.
Meanwhile the police confirmed to Cleveland 19 that there was no fraud on behalf of McCowans.
The bank's rep released a statement and explained there had been a spate of fraud cases in the past few months, and said the tellers were taking extra precautions.
In a full statement, Huntington stated: 'We sincerely apologize to Mr. McCowns for this extremely unfortunate event.
'We accept responsibility for contacting the police as well as our own interactions with Mr. McCowns. Anyone who walks into a Huntington branch should feel welcomed. Regrettably, that did not occur in this instance and we are very sorry. We hold ourselves accountable to the highest ethical standards in how we operate, hire and train colleagues, and interact with the communities we have the privilege of serving.'
Meanwhile McCowns says he wants not only an apology from the bank but for the tellers responsible to be held accountable.
A Huntington rep claims they have attempted to reach McCowns to apologize but that he has not returned their calls.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
