«Breaking News» UK weather: Britain braces for chilly weekend as Jack Frost bites

Britain is braced for a very chilly weekend as the mercury plummets below freezing across the country.

Some parts of the country will see frosty conditions overnight tonight with some freezing fog developing tomorrow morning - although the dry conditions mean there is little chance of snow.

The UK is currently in the grip of a bitterly cold snap which has seen Public Health England issue a 'level two' alert for 'dangerous' freezing conditions - warning pensioners and vulnerable patients are at risk.

And there may be worse to come following the polar vortex break-up, known as Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), which could lead to another Beast from the East sweeping in before the end of the month.

SSW is where the temperature suddenly rises high up in the stratosphere, between six and 30 miles above the North Pole, and it can result in a chain reaction that leads to very cold conditions from eastern Europe and Russia.

Temperatures fell as low as -8C (18F) in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, this morning - after the coldest night of the winter so far in Scotland early yesterday morning, with Braemar in the same county recording -10.5C (13F).

Met Office forecaster Nicola Maxey said the wintry weather will continue into the weekend, with areas where there are clear skies expected to see the coldest temperatures.

She added: 'We are going to see a fairly cloudy day today, it's a bit grey, fairly dry, with a few sunny spells were we get breaks in the clouds.

'There will be some isolated light showers in the North West and it's going to feel fairly cold, with temperatures for most staying in the low single figures. In the North East, temperatures will be struggling to get over freezing.

'London today should be 5C (41F) or 6C (43F). Tonight, we are looking at temperatures dropping below freezing again for many areas. We could potentially see -4C (25F) or -5C (23F) for parts of the country.

What is the polar vortex... and how could its break-up lead to another Beast from the East in Britain?

The polar vortex is a circulation of winds high up in the stratosphere, up to 30 miles (50 km) above the earth.

The winds regularly exceed 155mph, which is the gust strength in the strongest Category 5 hurricanes.

During the winter it can strengthen and weaken – and sometimes it can break down entirely, in an event meterologists call a 'Sudden Stratospheric Warming'.

This sees the temperature suddenly rise up in the stratosphere above the North Pole - and it can result in a chain reaction that leads to very cold conditions from eastern Europe and Russia.

An SSW took place last week, which could result in a 'Beast from the East' towards the end of this month.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said: 'Towards the end of January, there is an increased likelihood of a change to much colder weather generally, bringing an enhanced risk of frost, fog and snow.'

The 2018 Beast from the East saw large parts of the UK blanketed in snow, with some public transport grinding to a halt as the cold weather lasted into March.

'Where we get the breaks in the cloud for sunshine, we will also get the coldest temperatures at night.'

Ms Maxey said London could see lows of -3C (27F), while Newcastle and Manchester, where it is cloudier, will have minimum temperatures of 1C (34F) or 2C (26F).

Tomorrow is shaping up to be another cloudy, cold day with sunny spells for some and light drizzle in the West, and temperatures likely to peak at around 6C (43F) or 7C (45F).

Sunday will see temperatures increasing slightly, with London and Bristol expected to see highs creep into the double digits as colder air moves away.

But a low-pressure weather system will bring stronger winds to Scotland and the Met Office will issue a yellow weather warning for Monday into Tuesday.

The freezing conditions - caused by a movement of high pressure which has swept in arctic air - prompted Public Health England to issue a cold weather health warning.

The level two alert - the second to be issued this winter - is in place across northern England, Yorkshire and the West Midlands while southern England is covered by a less severe level one alert.

Health bosses have warned that the prolonged freezing conditions could increase health risks to vulnerable patients, as average temperatures stay below 2C (35F) for 48 hours or longer.

Dr Emer O'Connell, public health consultant at Public Health England said: 'Every winter thousands of people die a death that is linked to cold. Those particularly at risk include older people, those with existing ill health, including heart and lung conditions, and young children.

'For the next few days it is really important for us all to keep a look out for the people we know who could be affected, and make sure they get the help and support they need to stay well this winter.

'If you know someone at risk this winter check that they have had their flu jab, that they are heating their home to at least 18C (64F) and that if the weather stops them getting out and about, that they know you can help fetch shopping or prescriptions.

'By thinking of others this winter we can all stay well.'

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said. 'A sudden stratospheric warming has happened. The warming started around December 22, 2018 and the winds at around 30km (19 miles) above the North Pole have now reversed from westerly to easterly.

'At ground level we know that sudden stratospheric warmings tend to weaken the UK's prevailing mild westerly winds, increasing the chances of us seeing colder weather a couple of weeks after a sudden stratospheric warming.

'However, it's important to note that not all sudden stratospheric warmings lead to colder-than-normal conditions over the UK and there are other global weather factors that result in blocked weather patterns and possible colder weather for us.

'These include El Niño and the Madden-Julian Oscillation that were well signalled in our three-month outlook as early as the end of November.

'Certainly, for the first ten days of January there is no strong signal for a cold easterly flow that was associated with the 'Beast from the East' last winter, and it's too early to provide detailed forecasts for what the weather will be like for the remainder of January.

'Our current six to 30 day forecast points to the likelihood of more mobile conditions before the arrival of anything that might potentially be colder.

'Towards the end of January, however, there is an increased likelihood of a change to much colder weather generally, bringing an enhanced risk of frost, fog and snow.'

The exact amount can not say because there are many nuances. It will be necessary to build a small laboratory with certain parameters. To all interested persons please write on an email angocman@gmail.com . It is the scientific project and I do not know whether it is possible to earn on it. The probability of success of the project is approximately 60%. That will be very interesting.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
