«Breaking News» Ted Bundy survivor breaks silence following controversy over Zac Efron's 'sexualized' serial killer

The first trailer for the new Ted Bundy film, starring Zac Efron, sparked huge controversy over the 'hyper-sexualization' of the notorious serial killer.

Critics slammed the promotional clip for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile as 'romanticized' and a 'punch in the face' for the victims' families.

But one of Bundy's rare survivors says she doesn't mind Efron's 'hot take' on the murderer, seen for the first time on Friday after it aired at the Sundance Film Festival, and thinks the heartthrob is the perfect fit.

Kathy Kleiner Rubin was a 20-year-old sorority sister at Florida State University when Bundy crept into her dorm room at 3am on January 15, 1978, and beat her and her roommate with a club.

Critics have slammed the movie for over-emphasizing Bundy's charm and good looks, showing Efron with his shirt off and in a romantic clutch with his wife Liz Koefle, who is played by Lily Collins.

But Kleiner Rubin said she doesn't have 'a problem with people looking at it, and as long as they understand that what they're watching wasn't a normal person.

She told TMZ: 'I believe that in order to show him exactly the way he was, it's not really glorifying him, but it's showing him, and when they do say positive and wonderful things about him … that's what they saw, that's what Bundy wanted you to see.'

But she conceded that the movie 'does glorify him more than I think he should be.'

She added: 'I think everyone should see it and understand him as what he was, even when he was the perfect son.

'I think hopefully it will make... more women take care of their surroundings and be cautious.

'He had different tactics that he used  to help people to help him get in cars or do things and in your gut if you feel like something doesn't feel right, just say no.'

But not everyone is happy with the portrayal of Bundy, who was executed in 1989 after he confessed to killing 30 women in seven states and escaped custody twice.

One person tweeted: 'That's exactly what Ted Bundy wanted. posthumous fame for his cruelties.

'You can count on Hollywood to make the worst human beings immortal. What's next? The Harvey Weinstein biopic?

'What a punch to the face for the victim's families after all these years.'

Another user referenced the way the star came off as attractive as he might have in other flick's he's famed for such as Baywatch in 2017.

'Can we not sexualize Ted Bundy? He raped, murdered, and decapitated women and had sex with their dead bodies.

'Not here for this hyper-sexualized Zac Efron film. I know the youth of twitter will obsess over him, and I'd prefer not to read thirst tweets about a serial murderer,' another account shared.

But some people disagreed and pointed out that former Disney star heartthrob was the correct casting for a motion picture about how Bundy was romanticized by the media as his slayings of the 70s were reported.

One person compared it to seeing real footage of the murderer in episodes of Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, which came out on Netflix this week.

'And in this moment, watching the ted bundy tapes, I realized just how spot on casting zac efron as ted bundy was… this is unsettling,' Joanna wrote.

What some may not know is the documentary on the video-streaming website shares the same director, Joe Berlinger, as the new film.

Others jumped to the defense of the Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile movie-makers and explained that portraying Bundy as attractive was intentional.

The movie is currently being shown at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival with actress Lily Collins (who portrays Bundy's wife Liz Kloepfer, doing the promotional rounds with Efron.

One person wrote: 'Psst, hey woke twitter, in real life Ted Bundy was romanticized by the media and everyone he knew. That's what the Extremely Wicked trailer is reflecting and what the movie will attach head on.'

Another added: 'I hope people know this movie isn't glamorizing/romanticizing ted bundy. This film is through the eyes of his girlfriend liz kloepfer who refused to believe he was anything but a good guy and that he never did anything wrong. That's why the trailer seems the way it does.'

At Sundance, the flick's director Joe Berlinger said it's likely to be received well at general release, judging by the reactions at screenings on Saturday and Sunday morning.

'Audiences are loving it, which is great. You could just feel it. People really seem to be connecting and getting something out of it,' Salt Lake City Tribune reports he said.

The helmer explained that by telling the story through the eyes of his devoted partner, it was important not highlight the horrifying details of his murders at the beginning stages of the motion picture.

'We're giving the audience the same experience Liz had in their encounter with Ted,' Berlinger explained. That experience being 'able to be deceived by somebody who's so believable and charismatic'.

'I certainly don't think we're glorifying him because he gets his due,' he said.

The flick's director Joe Berlinger said it's important to not show too many horrifying details early on in the film because it's through the eyes of his wife Liz

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
