The Oscar-winner said he was further motivated by friends in the #MuteRKelly movement who have marched in the streets to protest longstanding allegations of sexual abuse of women and girls by the Chicago singer.
Speaking of Dream, he said: 'I respect her work a lot, she asked me if I wanted to do it and I said yes,'
'I don't want to cast aspersions on anybody who didn't do it,' said John who noted there could be various reasons for not participating in a documentary.
John, who appeared alongside wife Chrissy Teigen on the show, also praised the work of the people who have joined the #MuteRKelly movement.

He said: 'They work with rape victims in Chicago and they try to help them recover ...and they work with a lot of black girls in Chicago who are overlooked.
'I knew that as a celebrity that I could lend my voice to something that would highlight these young people who have been hurt and give them a voice, and make sure they're heard, and so I said I'm going to do it.'
Surviving R. Kelly, which aired last week, interviews dozens of former friends, family members and colleagues, who all make grim claims about the singer abusing women and young girls.
R. Kelly is accused of running an 'abusive cult' over several years at his homes in Illinois and Georgia, as he allegedly preyed on dozens of young women.
The series follows the BBC's "R Kelly: Sex, Girls & Videotapes," which was released last year. It alleged that the singer was holding women against their will and running a "sex cult."

He is also alleged to have used forged documents so he could marry fellow musician Aaliyah when she was aged just 15 and he was 27.
Earlier this month it was claimed by TMZ that the singer was planning legal action against Lifetime if they aired the documentary.
In a legal letter written by Kelly's lawyer Brian Nix and obtained by TMZ, a federal lawsuit was threatened for the same day the documentary was due to air, if the programme isn't pulled from schedules.
Kelly is claiming the subjects in the documentary are making false allegations to become famous, and also claims he has two audio recordings that show Lifetime knew 'some of the girls are lying, but that the budget was too high to turn back now.
Activists from the #MeToo and #MuteRKelly social media movements have seized on the renewed attention to call for streaming services to drop Kelly's music and promoters not to book any more concerts.
On Thursday it was announced R. Kelly may soon face trial in a sexual assault lawsuit filed by Faith Rodgers, who claims the singer raped her and gave her herpes.
Court documents obtained by DailyMail.com show that Lydia Agu, the lawyer for Rodgers, filed a request for a preliminary conference last week and Judge Arlene P Bluth has been assigned to preside over the case.
Rodgers held a press conference on Friday in New York City where she repeated many of the allegations made in her lawsuit, including that Kelly knowingly infected her with Herpes, raped her and physically abused her over the course of their year-long relationship.
She was just 19 at the time of these alleged offenses.
Agu tells DailyMail.com that she is waiting to hear back from the court on a date for the preliminary conference.
Kelly's lawyer has responded to recent allegations by stating: 'Mr. Kelly has done nothing. That's why no one has called the police. That's why there's no evidence of him doing anything wrong.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
