«Breaking News» David Gauke says Brexit will be DELAYED if Tory MPs oust Theresa May tonight

Brexit will have to be delayed if mutinous Tory MPs oust Theresa May tonight, Justice Secretary David Gauke today warned.

He said that voters will never forgive the Tories if they topple their leader just when she is in the closing stages of some of the most important talks in modern political history.

The Cabinet minister warned that Britain will be plunged into 'chaos' if the PM loses tonight's no confidence vote.

And he said it would take some time to pick a new leader, meaning that Article 50 - the mechanism which sets the two-year clock ticking on talks - would have to be delayed.

Mrs May is in the political battle of her life to cling on as leader as she faces a confidence vote that could see her ousted as leader by the end of the day.

Mr Gauke told the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme: 'In terms of negotiating any type of arrangement with the European Union, I think it is inevitable that if she were to lose the vote tonight there would be need to be a delay in Article 50.

'I don't think we would be leaving the European Union on the 29th of March.'

He said that it is 'vital' Mrs May wins tonight and defeat would leave the country in 'chaos'.

'People would struggle to forgive us if that happens,' he said.

The loyal Cabinet minister scrambled to give the the PM his backing on the radio minutes after news broke that Mrs May will face a confidence vote tonight.

Eurosceptics have secured the 48 letters from MPs needed to force a ballot that could end the PM's time as leader.

In a statement made on the steps of No10 this morning,  Mrs May vowed to contest the vote with 'everything I have got'.

She warned Brexit would need to be delayed if she loses and Jeremy Corbyn might end up in power.

And she said: 'I have devoted myself unsparingly since I became Prime Minister... and I stand ready to finish the job.'

Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the powerful 1922 committee, said the threshold had been 'exceeded' and Mrs May was eager to resolve the issue 'rapidly'.

He said the PM's reaction when he notified her last night had been 'business like' and she will deliver a speech to MPs at 5pm before voting begins an hour later.

She was very concerned that the matter should e resolved as rapidly as possible,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Cabinet ministers immediately rallied to try and shore up Mrs May, with Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid, Amber Rudd and Brandon Lewis making clear they will be support her.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
