«Breaking News» Uber to RESUME testing self-driving cars after a mother-of-two killed by one earlier this year

Uber Technologies Inc's UBER.UL is plotting the return of its self-driving cars, but the company known for its hard-charging style is taking a much more conservative approach as it tries to recover from a fatal accident that upended its autonomous vehicle program.

After it receives approval from the state of Pennsylvania, Uber plans to begin driving 'a handful' of cars on a mile loop between two company offices in Pittsburgh, where Uber first debuted its autonomous vehicles in 2016, company spokeswoman Sarah Abboud said.

The new diminutive launch is a dramatic downsize from Uber's previous operation.

The company in the past unleashed its fleet in autonomous mode on public roads at high speeds, after dark, in areas crowded with pedestrians and with a single backup driver in the front seat.

This time, the cars will not operate at night or in wet weather, and will not exceed speeds of 25 miles per hour, Abboud said.

Two employees will sit in the front seats, and the company has no plans to resume picking up passengers in the robot cars, a service Uber launched in 2016.

These would be Uber's first self-driving car tests since it halted all operations on public streets in Arizona, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto while regulators investigated the cause of the March 18 crash in Tempe, Arizona that killed a pedestrian.

The autonomous Uber car spotted 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg about six seconds before fatally hitting her.

It did not stop because the system used to automatically apply brakes in potentially dangerous situations had been disabled, US federal investigators said.

Sensors on the fully autonomous Volvo XC-90 SUV registered mother-of-two Ms. Herzberg while the car was travelling at 43mph and determined that braking was needed just 1.3 seconds before impact, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report.

Ms Herzberg was pushing a bicycle across a boulevard in the darkness when the crash occurred on a part of the road that had no crossing and was not lit, the report said.

She was wearing dark clothing and did not look in the direction of the vehicle until just before impact.

A toxicology report showed that she tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, according to the NTSB.

The bicycle had no side reflectors and the front and back reflectors were perpendicular to the Uber SUV.

The New York Times first reported on Uber's plans on Wednesday.

Abboud said Uber was awaiting approval from Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation and would not begin testing before then.

She said there was no firm start date.

Resuming an autonomous driving program is crucial. Uber has a deal with Volvo to purchase up to 24,000 cars, and recently Toyota invested $500 million to develop self-driving cars with Uber.

Uber had pledged to start self-driving operations by this past summer in Pittsburgh, but the company faced immense pressure from regulators, federal investigators and an internal review of safety practices.

Last month, Uber released a safety report that outlined several changes, including enabling an automatic braking system and improving the cars' ability to quickly detect and react to objects on the road.

The National Transportation Safety Board has an ongoing investigation into the Arizona crash, the findings of which are expected in a major report next year.

After it receives ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
