The gunman who shot dead a Trader Joe's store manager after a crime spree which saw him try to kill his own grandmother, take his girlfriend hostage and ram his car into a pole earlier this year has told a judge that he plans to plead 'insanity'.

Gene Evin Atkins is representing himself in court on charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and dozens of others.

In July this year, Atkins, 28, shot his grandmother then kidnapped his girlfriend and took police on a car chase in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

He crashed his car into a police outside a Trader Joe's. He then exchanged gunfire with police then went into the store and took shoppers and staff hostage.

Some were able to escape by climbing out of the windows but store manager Melyda Corado died at the scene.

It is not clear if it was one of Atkins' bullets which hit her or if it was one that came from a police officer's gun as they engaged in a gun battle with Atkins but because he was responsible for the shootout, he is being charged with her death.

For three hours, he held the hostages inside before agreeing to come out handcuffed.

Atkins had been shot in the arm by the time he emerged.

Since his arrest, Atkins' cousin has told how the entire chain of events happened because his grandmother told him to turn off the television in their home.

During a plea hearing on Monday, Atkins was asked how he would plead and said: 'I'm pleading insanity.'

He asked the judge if he could postpone his arraignment, seemingly not understanding that it took place months ago.

'The arraignment’s happened,' L.A. County Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan told him, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He said he had an 'extensive mental health record' and suffered bipolar disorder despite being found competent to not only stand trial but to represent himself earlier this year.

Atkins will return to court on February 15. At the end of the hearing on Monday, he told the judge: 'My defense has already been prepared.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
