«Breaking News» Tesla car catches fire TWICE in one day and firefighters battle blaze with 2000 gallons of water

A shocked driver said he will never buy another Tesla car after his brand new vehicle burst into flames two times in a day.

While driving on the highway, the northern Californian motorist car's got a flat tire and was towed to the nearby Los Gatos Tire and Auto Repair.

As he was filing paperwork, the Tesla Model S owner heard a 'funny hissing sound' and thought it was coming from the shop next door, but turned around to see his vehicle on fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene and doused the car with 2000 gallons of water.

Santa Clara County Fire Captain Bill Murphy told ABC news his crew extinguished the initial fire 'very quickly' but shortly afterwards saw gas and steam coming off the car, which they thought to be the batteries burning.

Murphy's crew then contacted Elon Musk's company Tesla, who recommended propping up the car to access the underbody to locate the battery.

The car was later moved to a nearby tow yard, where it again burst into flames.

Fire crews then spent another ten hours at the scene to keep the car under control.

Murphy added that firefighters are adjusting the way respond to calls due to the rise of electric vehicles.

'The presence of large lithium ion batteries in vehicles is something we are encountering more often. It's still categorised as vehicle fire. We just have a different fuel now. There is some additional complexity to the fuel that's burning.'

The driver had only owned the Tesla for three months, and had driven it around 1,200 miles.

He told KGO-TV it it would be the last Tesla his family owned.

Why are fires in electric cars so hard to put out?

Electric car fires are infamously difficult to extinguish, and Tesla admits that they can take up to 24 hours to fully put out.

Unlike petrol and diesel car fires, which once extinguished are out, lithium-ion batteries can easily reignite.

Huge amounts of water are needed to cool the battery, then the power cables must be cut – which puts firefighters at risk of electrocution.

The toxic gases released from the battery add an extra layer of risk.

Tesla cars have caught on fire numerous times in the last five years, causing it to be mocked after calling itself 'the world's safest car'.

In 2013, a driver of a $70,000 Tesla Model S in Washington State hit a piece of debris, causing the engine to catch fire and the California-based company's stock to drop six per cent overnight.

Thirty-five firefighters tackled a blaze in the same model on a motorway near Landeck, Austria after a 19-year-old driver crashed into a concrete barrier at the side of the road.

More recently, a Model X's high-voltage lithium-ion battery was removed from the smouldering in Mountain View, California, on March 23.

The driver Walter Huang, 38, died after the car plowed into a concrete barrier on Highway 101.

Previous Tesla fires

Following a series of fires in 2013, Tesla began outfitting new cars with a triple underbody shield to bring the risk of fire down to 'virtually zero,' according to a March 2014 blog post written by Chief Executive Elon Musk.

Here is a list of incidents of Tesla vehicles catching fire since 2013:

October 1, 2013 - A Tesla Model S caught fire near Seattle, after the car collided with a large piece of metal debris on the road that punched a hole through the protective armor plating. The driver was not injured.

October 2013 - A Tesla car crashed through a concrete wall and hit a tree, catching fire in Merida, Mexico. The driver was not injured.

November 2013 - A Tesla Model S caught fire after the electric car ran over a tow hitch that hit the undercarriage of the vehicle, in Smyrna, Tennessee. The driver was not injured.

February 2014 - A Tesla Model S caught fire in Toronto, Canada, with the fire originating in the engine area. There were no injuries.

March 2014 - Following the fires, Tesla cars were outfitted with a triple underbody shield to bring the risk of fire down to 'virtually zero', following the car fires of 2013, Elon Musk said in a blog post on March 28, 2014.

July 2014 - A stolen Tesla Model S crashed into several vehicles and split in half after striking a light pole in West Hollywood, catching fire and leaving the driver in a critical condition, two officers hospitalized and half of the car wedged in a synagogue.

June 2015 - A 2013 Tesla plunged off a cliff along Malibu Canyon Road, and caught fire killing the 53-year-old driver.

August 2016 - A Tesla electric car caught fire during a promotional tour in southwest France. No one was injured in the incident.

November 2016 - A Tesla vehicle crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Indianapolis, killing the driver and the passenger.

March 2017 - A Tesla Model S caught fire at the Jinqiao Supercharger Station in Shanghai, China. No one was harmed in the incident.

August 2017 - A Tesla vehicle went off road in Lake Forest, California and crashed into a home, igniting a garage fire. The driver in the Tesla was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

October 2017 - A Tesla Model S caught fire in Austria, after the driver crashed into a concrete barrier at the side of the road. The driver survived the crash.

As he was filing ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
