«Breaking News» Terrified passengers scream as dollar van driver recklessly evades police in Brooklyn

Terrified passengers screaming and hanging on for dear life were captured on camera as a dollar commuter van driver tried to evade police in Brooklyn after running a red light.

The high speed chase through the Flatbush neighborhood took place on December 3, Pix11 reported.

Hector Ricketts, president of the Commuter Van Association of New York, said he was disappointed but far from surprised about the harrowing encounter the people on board the van were subjected to.

'There were people screaming for their lives being held hostage, and fortunately it did not end in tragedy,' said Ricketts.

'We have often warned the city about how dangerous the situation is,' he said, referring to rampant illegal operations being run in New York.

The video shows people clutching to seats for dear life and one woman can be heard yelling, 'my baby, please!' as the driver takes the passengers on an erratic ride while trying to get away from authorities.

Riders were hurled across the aisles and slammed against the windows as the driver raced down the roadway.

The Sheriff's Department says the chase started when the driver ran a red light, then took off as the deputies tried to pull him over.

Eventually the driver does stop the van, then takes off on foot with officers and deputies giving chase.

Ricketts noted that illegal commuter vans have posed a danger to society for years in New York, and that drivers operating without a proper commuter van license now face more risk if they're caught.

Recent changes to the law have increased fines, and enforcement has been expanded, so authorities and legal commuter van drivers both agree illegal commuter van drivers have more to lose if caught during an unlicensed operation.

'The atmosphere with the enforcement right now is that the illegal guys can get a $2,000 ticket. That's a big dent that I'm assuming they cannot afford,' one driver who agreed to speak with Pix11 on the condition on anonymity said.

The driver didn't want to be identified for fear of retaliation from illegal drivers.

'It needs more regulations because if you have 100, 200 guys out here that own their own vehicle or are driving for someone else, that individual is going to make his own individual decision on how to make his money,' the driver said.

City Council member Jumaane Williams, who used to depend on commuter vans to get to school and helped make licensing easier for driver in 2017, has noted the industry needs to be protected.

'We have now created a way for you to be able to provide this service in a way that's responsible for everyone,' Williams said.

'Please avail yourself of that or else we're just making it difficult for the entire industry and we don't want the public to now push back on so many things that we're doing because transportation is critically important.'

Williams noted that riders should take care to ensure they're patronizing only properly licensed commuter vans.

Legal operations should have a company name, livery license plates, and TLC stickers, he said, meaning drivers should not have a reason to evade police if they find themselves in a situation where they may be pulled over.

Hector Ricketts, ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
