«Breaking News» Listeners react with disbelief as BBC Radio 4 Today presenters close the show by singing KARAOKE

Listeners to the BBC's flagship current affairs show were left in disbelief this morning as presenters closed the show by singing karaoke.

The BBC Radio 4 Today Programme is best known for grilling politicians on the toughest topics of the day.

But guest editor Martha Lane Fox mixed things up by getting the presenters and studio crew to sing a rendition of Dolly Parton's Islands in the Stream live on air.

Lady Lane-Fox, a peer who founded Last Minute during the dotcom boom, said she decided to pick the unusual ending because she is a huge fan of karaoke.

But listeners could barely believe their ears as presenters Mishal Husain and Justin Web led the studio in the shay version of the karaoke classic.

Presenter Justin Webb excitedly tweeted a picture of the singalong from inside the studio (pictured)

Seonag MacKinnon tweeted: 'As if 2018 hasn’t been surreal enough. Presenters and crew of @BBCr4today play out this morning’s programme by singing karaoke.

'Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s Islands in the Stream, since you ask. #whatistheworldcomingto.'

Another listener, Patricia, wrote: ' Not often I listen to the fade out of the Today programme with a smile, but a good old karaoke sing along will do that.'

The Reverend Giles Fraser, a regular on the show who often does Thought for the Day, excitedly tweeted a photograph from inside the studio as he geared up to take part in the sing-along.

Listener Ian George replied:  'I agree with neither your views on politics or religion, but I will support to my final breath your right to sing karaoke on the Today programme!'

And fellow listener Angie Wootten wrote: 'This isn't quite how I remember your Thought for the Day but I may still have been dreaming as well.

'Rabbits seemed to feature....and it was good.'

The two Today presenters both tweeted pictures of the singalong from inside the BBC studio.

But listeners were split on how they rated the performance, with some saying they 'loved' it but others declaring it was 'mercifully short'.

During the Christmas period, the BBC Radio 4 show gets in figures from the worlds of politics and the arts to guest edit the show.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
