Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says she's ordered 'extraordinary protective measures', including manadatory checkups of migrant children, after the death of an 8-year-old Guatemalan child in immigration custody.
Nielsen says that the American immigration system has been been 'pushed to a breaking point by those who seek open borders.'
She said in a statement Wednesday that she had asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate what she says is an 'uptick in sick children crossing our borders.'
'This tragedy, the death of a child in government custody is deeply concerning and heartbreaking,' Nielsen wrote.
'In the last 24 hours, I have ... directed a series of additional actions to care for those who enter our custody.'

She also wants the U.S. Coast Guard to examine the medical programs offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency that detained the 8-year-old and his father for a week.
Nielsen also pledged that all children in the future will receive a 'more thorough' medical screening after they are apprehended.
'Moving forward, all children will receive a more thorough hands on assessment at the earliest possible time post apprehension - whether or not the accompanying adult has asked for one,' the Homeland Security Secretary said.
The boy, identified by Guatemalan officials as Felipe Gomez Alonzo, was the second child to die in CBP custody this month.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who will likely be House Speaker in days after the new Congress is sworn in after the New Year, said on Wednesday that lawmakers will investigate deaths of migrant children who cross the border.
Democrats will also demand that the Homeland Security Department's inspector general investigate the deaths of Gomez Alonzo and seven-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin, the Guatemalan girl who died earlier this month in the custody of Customs and Border Protection, Pelosi said in a statement.

Jakelin's father remains in the United States, where the father and daughter turned themselves in to U.S. border agents on Dec. 6, hoping they could find a way of staying to start a new life.
After falling ill, Jakelin died from a combination of cardiac arrest, brain swelling and liver failure, U.S. officials said.
The head of CBP says the recent deaths of the two migrant children are 'an extraordinarily rare occurrence' that is 'devastating' to the agency.
Speaking Wednesday to CBS This Morning, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan says that before this month, it had been more than a decade since a child died in the agency's care.

Democrats are demanding an investigation into the deaths of two migrant children. One of them, Jakelin Caal Maquin, is seen in the above file photo
McAleenan says officers have been conducting medical checks and doing 'dozens of hospital trips every day' for ill children.
He says the agency is seeing more children than ever in its custody.
The father of the 8-year-old boy, Agustin Gomez, said his son had shown no signs of illness before falling sick Monday, the same day he died.
That's according to Oscar Padilla, the Guatemalan consul in Phoenix, who met with Gomez on Wednesday.
Padilla says Agustin Gomez told him Felipe wasn't sick when they were detained at the U.S.-Mexico border on Dec. 18 or in the five days to follow.
Felipe was hospitalized Monday after a border agent noticed he was coughing. He was released from the hospital Monday afternoon, but taken back that night.
Gomez told the consul that he carried Felipe in his arms as they were taken to the hospital for the second and last time.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
