«Breaking News» Emily Blunt thought she was being asked to play JAMES BOND when she got the call for Mary Poppins

She's playing the iconic nanny 54 years after Julie Andrews made the role famous.

But when Emily Blunt got the call asking her to portray Mary Poppins in this Christmas' highly-anticipated sequel Mary Poppins Returns, the actress believed she was being approached to be the next James Bond.

'I knew something big was in the pipeline. And it was like either [director Rob Marshall] is asking me to be James Bond or Mary Poppins!' she told Rochelle Humes and Phillip Schofield on Thursday's edition of This Morning.

'Hilariously, I think I was playing a blackout drunk for Girl On The Train when I got approached about playing Mary Poppins! I of course was completely overjoyed and overwhelmed… I was just really shocked but quite quickly my thrill at playing her overwhelmed the fear.

'It is such iconic territory that you’re walking into, but it was that excitement of trying to create my own version of her.'

The A Quiet Place star admitted that she hadn’t watched the original Mary Poppins - which was released in 1964 and also starred Dick Van Dyke, who makes a cameo in the 2018 sequel - since she was a child.

Emily confessed: 'I had such a profound memory of it and was spellbound by it - like the rest of the world - but I felt that I didn’t want to be intimidated by what Julie Andrews did!

On singing and dancing in the role, Emily said: 'The singing was less daunting… but with the dancing we had about nine weeks of rehearsals and those huge show-stopping numbers did take a bit of work!

'I made the mistake of learning them wearing trainers and then you have to do it in your heels, and you go from thinking "I’m an amazing dancer", to "I’m a dreadful dancer" immediately!'

Referring to the way they shot the movie, Emily said: 'I think the key was that we really wanted things to be practically captured, but I think with green screen you can become anesthetized. You can be left feeling quite cold.

'My umbrella was an animatronic umbrella, I didn't get to keep it, but I did steal one of the new umbrellas.'

On working with Dick Van Dyke, Emily admitted: 'He was so magical. We were all just sat around him and just wanted him to tell us about the first film.

'He was always dancing and entertaining the crew… and at one point he paused and then held my hand and sang "It’s a jolly holiday with Mary", and I was like, "You’re gonna make me cry!"... it was so special.'

Of wrapping the film and finally seeing it released, the Devil Wears Prada actress said: 'There's a sense of relief for all of us, we all love the film and we're really proud of it.

But its obviously a relief when, universally, people feel the same.'

This Morning weekdays, 10.30AM on ITV. Mary Poppins Returns is released in the UK on December 21.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
