It's the biggest night of the year for many, with millions around the world set to ring in 2019 with a bang.

But if you want your party outfit to be a hit as opposed to a miss, you could do well to pay attention to a few pointers.

With this in mind, celebrity stylist and personal shopper Alarna Hope shared with FEMAIL the dos and don'ts of dressing for New Year's Eve - especially if you want to pick up.

From short skirts to sequins, here are her top tips - and the biggest 'turn off' items.

FOR WOMEN - THE DOS

WRAP DRESSES AND A-LINE SKIRTS

What are the dos for women?

Comfortable heels or boots

Sequins

Power dressing

Big prints and bold lips

When it comes to a successful New Year's Eve outfit for a woman, Alarna said the key things to think about are comfort and confidence.

'Wear something you feel fantastic in,' she told Daily Mail Australia.

'A New Year should be welcomed with something exciting and done wearing clothes you feel fabulous and comfortable in.'

This might be a much-loved wrap dress or a new A-line skirt - both of which are items that are 'universally flattering shapes for women'.

'Wear these high on your waist,' Alarna added - because this is where they will look their best.

COMFORTABLE HEELS OR BOOTS

The stylist and Sydney-based personal shopper also said that comfortable stack heels or boots are your best bet to be having a good time when the clock strikes 12.

'My mantra is: If you can't boogie in it, don't wear it,' she said.

SEQUINS

A good alternative to simple wrap dresses and A-line skirts, Alarna explained you can't go wrong with sequins on December 31.

'Every year, New Year's Eve dressing trends tend to stay the same,' she said.

'It's all about sequins, sparkles and "going out" dresses. In colder countries, this might mean thick tights with sequin skirts and leather jackets.

'While here in Australia, it's all about linen double-breasted blazers, camisoles and matching shorts.'

POWER DRESSING

Alarna also said she loves the idea of 'power dressing for a New Year'.

'I think we should be ditching the trends and putting something on that we feel powerful in.'

While Alarna (pictured) said for the most part, you should wear something you feel comfortable and confident in, she also said that NYE is a good time to 'challenge yourself to wear something you usually wouldn't

BIG PRINTS OR BOLD LIPS

While Alarna said for the most part, you should wear something you feel comfortable and confident in, she also said that NYE is a good time to 'challenge yourself to wear something you usually wouldn't.

'Whether this is a big print, some sparkles, a bold lip or statement earrings, New Year's Eve is a great opportunity to go slightly outside your sartorial comfort zone in order to get noticed.'

The stylist said a bold red lip or some oversized earrings might cause an old friend to look at you in a slightly different way - and could even lead to romance.

She did add, however, that you should think about whatever activity you might be doing in your garments.

'Mini skirts are fun until you find out that you're partying on a balcony and everyone downstairs is seeing more than they need to!'.

FOR WOMEN - THE DON'TS

SKY HIGH HEELS

They might be seen as the ultimate leg lengthener - but sky high heels are not the right choice for New Year's Eve.

'Everyone is over the super tall stilettos and platforms,' Alarna explained.

'You're far better off wearing a comfortable heel, kitten shoe or boot.'

What are the don'ts for women?

Sky high heels

Flashing too much flesh

Relying on nipple tape

FLASH TOO MUCH FLESH

'Don't show off all your assets at once,' Alarna said.

'Instead, pick a body part that you love and focus on showing that off.'

This, she explained, will help to create an outfit that's 'elegant and sexy' - and ideal for scoring a date on New Year's Eve.

RELY ON NIPPLE TAPE

In a similar vein to flashing too much flesh, Alarna said you should never rely on nipple tape or fabric glue for a new dress, as this might end in tears.

'Get fitted for the right bra for your dress. If you're going backless, you can buy backless bras, or get your hands on silicone nipple covers.

'These are washable and have a better hold on sweat.'

FOR MEN - THE DOS

PICK A DARK COLOUR

What are the major dos for men?

Wear an open collar

Match your belt to your shoes

Wear an accessory like a pocket square, a nice watch, cufflinks or a lapel pin.

Mix casual and smart by pairing a tee with a sports jacket

Add a fun, summery twist via a printed shirt or fabric woven belt

Dark colours are a great idea for men because Alarna said they will help to 'eliminate stains from spilt drinks'.

'If you're in a cold climate, a cotton button up and a knit with a wool blazer or overcoat is a classic option and can be worn with jeans and chinos,' she said.

'In summer, a cotton or linen button-up shirt with shorts or chinos will be practical and stylish.'

PRINTED SHIRTS OR FABRIC WOVEN BELTS

In a hot climate, Alarna said it can be good to add a fun and summery twist.

'Opt for a printed shirt or fabric woven belt for a fun twist, and if you're wearing shorts, don't forget to wear low cut or no-show socks,' she said.

'A pocket square will also lift your outfit and make it feel special.'

What are the don'ts for men?

Wear a tie unless you're heading to a formal event.

Avoid headwear unless you're outside.

Wear all white, it's a magnet for stains and can look too put together.

Wear something that will watermark if it gets wet, ie suede or silk

FOR MEN - THE DON'TS

WEAR A TIE

Unless you're heading to a formal event, Alarna said you should never wear a tie.

'Also avoid headwear unless you're outside,' Alarna said.

ALL WHITE

The stylist said you should avoid all white as it's a 'magnet for stains and can look too put together'.

'You should also avoid wearing something that will watermark if it gets wet, like suede or silk.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
