«Breaking News» BAZ BAMIGBOYE: Frozen the musical will transform the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane

The theatrical magic — and snowstorms — of the musical Frozen will transform the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane once Andrew Lloyd Webber’s £45 million refurbishment of the Covent Garden jewel is complete.

This column predicted a year ago (correctly) that the show’s director Michael Grandage and Thomas Schumacher, president and chief executive of Disney Theatricals, had their eye on the Drury Lane.

A deal has now been done for the venue, though both sides will need to work out exactly when, in 2020, the musical will open.

I suspect it may be autumn, given that work on the theatre — which will begin as soon as 42nd Street closes its run in January — is expected to take at least 18 months.

Disney Theatrical Productions declined to comment on any aspect of Frozen, which is based on the animated film featuring music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The songwriting couple won the 2014 Best Song Oscar for the smash hit Let It Go, which Idina Menzel voiced in the film and Caissie Levy sings on Broadway.

She certainly showed audiences her power when she performed it live at the Tony Awards in June. Wow.

However, it’s far too early to know whether Ms Levy will play Elsa at the Drury Lane, or whether Grandage and his team will recast Frozen with British actors.

In the meantime I hear unconfirmed rumours that Grandage, along with the songwriters, book writer Jennifer Lee, designer Christopher Oram and choreographer Rob Ashford, may tinker with the show and tighten it up for the West End.

They could re-examine the Hygge number, a song written by Anderson-Lopez and Lopez that wasn’t in the movie but opens the second act. It’s set in a sauna and has a high-kicking nude (body-stockinged) chorus line. I loved the rest of the show but that bit left me cold.

If the creatives get the balance right, my hunch is Frozen could be a bigger hit here than on Broadway.

Gabrielle Brooks, who was terrific in the recent Twelfth Night at the Young Vic. She has taken on the role of Alphonsine, a 17-year-old pupil at a Rwandan Catholic school in the early Eighties, in the UK premiere of Katori Hall’s scorching play Our Lady Of Kibeho, a hit off Broadway five years ago, which runs at the Royal and Derngate Theatre, in Northampton, from January 12.

The play reunites Hall with director James Dacre, who directed the Olivier award-winning production of Hall’s The Mountaintop.

Our Lady Of Kibeho is about the visions Alphonsine claims to see of the Virgin Mary. The thrilling drama pits tribal rivals Tutsis against Hutus, foreshadowing the Rwandan genocide that devastated the country in 1994.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
