Donald Trump has revealed he spoke with Kim Jong-un about the death of American student Otto Warmbier, who fell into a vegetative state while jailed in North Korea.
The President admitted that while 'some really, really bad things' had happened to the University of Virginia student, Kim had denied any involvement in his case.
'[Kim] tells me that he didn't know about it and I will take him at his word,' Trump told reporters in Hanoi after his summit with the dictator collapsed without a deal over reducing North Korea's nuclear stockpile.
Donald Trump said he spoke with Kim Jong-un about Otto Warmbier, a US student who fell into a vegetative state while in North Korea custody, and the dictator said he was not involved
He said: 'I really don't think [Warmbier's death] was in [Kim's] interests at all.
'I know the Warmbier family very well, they're a great family, what happened is horrible. I really believe something very bad happened to him.
'I don't think that the top leadership knew about it and when they had to send him home - by the way I got the prisoners back, I got the hostages back and Otto was one of the hostages - but he came back in a shape that was not even to be talked about.
'I thought it was horrible. The others came back extremely healthy but Otto came back in a condition that was just horrible.
'I did speak about it [with Kim]. I don't believe that he would have allowed that to happen, just wasn't to his advantage to allow that to happen.
'Those prisons are rough, they are rough places, and bad things happened but I really don't believe... that he knew about it.
'He felt badly about it. I did speak to him about it. He knew the case very well, but he knew it later and you know... you've got a big country, a lot of people.
Trump acknowledged that some 'really, really bad things' happened to Warmbier but added: '[Kim] tells me that he didn't know about it and I will take him at his word'
Trump spent the last two days in meetings with the North Korean leader in an attempt to negotiate a deal for the country to give up its nuclear weapons, but ultimately failed
'In those camps and those prisons you have a lot of people and some really bad people. And some bad things happened to Otto, some really, really bad things.
'But [Kim] tells me that he didn't know about it and I will take him at his word.'
Warmbier decided to go to North Korea from China while completing a study abroad program in Hong Kong at the end of 2015, as part of a tour group that included ten other Americans
The group celebrated New Year in Pyongyang, but at some point during the stay Warmbier took a propaganda poster from the wall of his hotel as a souvenir.
He was arrested at Pyongyang airport shortly after, before tearfully confessing on North Korean television that he had taken the poster after six weeks in detention.
Taking the poster was considered a crime against the state because the poster mentioned the names of the leadership.
As a result, Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor in March 2016, before being released in June 2017.
He was returned to the US in a vegetative state which North Korean authorities blamed on botulism, a rare bacterial infection that can be fatal.
American medical examiners said they found no evidence of the disease and said Otto's condition was the result of his brain being deprived of oxygen, likely because of a cardiac arrest.
They said large parts of his brain had died as a result of the oxygen deprivation, but couldn't pinpoint an exact cause. No evidence of torture was found.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
