A warehouse worker whose teenage daughter died from injuries allegedly inflicted during an assault when she was a baby appeared in court today charged with murder.
Dean Smith, 44, is said to have thrown four-week-old Maisie Newell eight feet across the room into her cot in August 2000.
Little Maisie suffered a fractured skull and brain damage after banging her head on a wall, the Old Bailey heard.
Dean Smith, 44, appeared by video link at the Old Bailey this morning accused of the murder of his daughter Maisie, who died aged 13, more than a decade after he allegedly banged her head against a wall when she was aged just four weeks. The teenager died in June 2014. The Old Bailey heard Smith's trial is expected to last for three weeks from July 29
She died aged 13 in June 2014 as a result of the severe disabilities she was left with following the assault by her father more than a decade earlier, it is claimed.
An inquest into her death has been repeatedly delayed pending a decision by the CPS to prosecute.
Smith was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter earlier this week.
Appearing via video-link from prison, he held his head in his hands and sobbed throughout much of the short administrative hearing at the Old Bailey this morning.
Citing the ‘extremely unusual’ circumstances of the case, Judge Richard Marks QC bailed Smith ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on 2 May.
A trial estimated to last up to three weeks was also fixed for July 29.
Smith, from Watford, Hertfordshire, is charged with murder and a lesser alternative charge of manslaughter.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
