«Breaking News» Volunteers clear 400 pieces of litter from a beach in just one hour

Most children go to the beach to splash in the waves, collect seashells and dig holes in the sand.

But last week, dozens of youngsters decided to forgo their fun and instead spent their time picking up litter.

The group of 80 volunteers, ranging from two to eight years old, found a shocking 400 pieces of rubbish in just one hour on Mablethorpe Beach in Lincolnshire.

They picked up bits of balloon, plastic bags, cotton bud sticks, cigarette butts, plastic netting, drink cans and beach toys found on the beach.

And more unsavoury items were found abandoned – dog litter bags, dirty nappies and even underwear.

Along with 20 adults, the youngsters combed a stretch of the beach about half a mile long and 32ft wide, filling 27 bags estimated to weigh around 33lb in total.

A tally of the items collected shows more than 100 plastic bags were picked up, along with more than 100 food wrappers, 27 pieces of polystyrene and more than 25 bags of dog poo.

Mablethorpe in Bloom, which organised the pick-up, say that they are now planning to clean the beach every three months. Alison Green, 63, the group’s marketing volunteer, said: ‘It’s so shocking when you look at it.

The plastic bags could have got into the mouths of animals and they could end up dying.

‘We picked up full bags of dog poo, so people had picked it up, put it in the bag but then dumped it on the beach. I get so frustrated by that.

‘People are getting lazier about picking up their rubbish. When you see people coming off the beach you see them just leave their waste in piles and that’s something you didn’t see 20 years ago.

‘We’re fighting an uphill battle but we’ll get there. It’s important because it shows just how much rubbish there is.’

The children, from the nearby Smarty Pants Nursery and Mablethorpe Primary Academy, braved wind chills of -3C (27F) on the day of the clean-up. The sandy beach offers a range of activities including donkey rides, and has chalets which are available to hire.

Reviews written online describe it as ‘the best and beautiful beach in Britain’ and ‘a lovely sandy beach’. Less enamoured visitors have complained it was ‘litter-strewn’ and had ‘fly-tipped rubbish scattered about’.

Army of 20,000 volunteers join The Mail's Spring Clean as the National Trust announces that it's on board too

An amazing 20,000 volunteers have now signed up to take part in the Great British Spring Clean.

The milestone was passed as the National Trust – the country’s biggest conservation charity, with 5.1million members – threw its weight behind our campaign to clean up our towns, cities, beaches and countryside.

Environmental group Greenpeace is also backing the initiative, organised with anti-litter charity Keep Britain Tidy, which aims to enlist half a million volunteers to help pick up litter between March 22 and April 23.

It has been praised by Theresa May, Sir David Attenborough, Prince William, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and even the United Nations.

The Church of England has also given its blessing and, in just five days 20,000 people have already pledged to offer their time to make a huge difference to the country.

The National Trust’s new director-general, Hilary McGrady, called on the charity’s members and the wider public to support the litter-picking drive.

Keeping the grounds of the trust’s stately homes and its farms and fields clear of litter is a huge burden.

Mrs McGrady called the Great British Spring Clean ‘a very positive thing’.

She said: ‘As a conservation charity, we work hard to keep our properties, countryside and coastline litter-free, but it’s an ongoing struggle for our people.

‘Time spent picking litter is time our staff and volunteers can’t be out on the ground doing valuable conservation work. Marine litter can have a devastating effect on our wildlife with animals, birds and fish feeding on it or getting trapped in it.

‘We have already eliminated plastic from our disposable cups and cutlery, but we know we all need to do more, so we are working to phase out single-use plastics at our places by 2022.

‘Our regular beach cleans with visitors and volunteers do help significantly, but we need everyone to take responsibility and take their litter home.

‘We find particularly high levels of littering around car parks and main roads, and on our tenant farms too.

‘Anything we can do to encourage people to act responsibly and take their litter home is a very positive thing.’

Greenpeace UK added its support to the campaign. Paul Morozzo, political campaigner at the organisation, said: ‘The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic initiative and demonstrates the huge public enthusiasm to stop the flow of plastic pollution into our oceans.

‘But the Government must do more to pull its weight. Setting clear reduction targets for single-use plastics and introducing a plastic bottle return scheme would cut the amount of plastics being used in the first place, and result in less waste polluting our streets, rivers and beaches.’

The charity urged Environment Secretary Michael Gove to stop ‘dragging his feet’ and to introduce clear targets for reducing plastic waste.

Further support came from politicians across the country yesterday.

John Grogan, the Labour MP for Ilkley in West Yorkshire, said he will write to schools and community groups in his constituency to take part.

He said: ‘I am regularly contacted by Ilkley residents for whom littering is a concern. The Great British Spring Clean offers the community an opportunity to tackle littering head on while also bringing people together from across the town.’

Nigel Huddleston, the Conservative MP for Mid Worcestershire, tweeted that he ‘hoped to see lots of #litterheroes out and about in Worcestershire when the campaign kicks off on March 22’.

The Daily Mail has long campaigned against the scourge of plastic in the environment. We helped put pressure on politicians and businesses which led to the introduction of charges on single-use plastic bags and the ban on toxic plastic microbeads in cosmetics.

Last year we helped to organise the Great Plastic Pick Up, in which more than 20,000 volunteers cleared litter over a single weekend.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
