New York's old Tappan Zee Bridge has been brought down in a spectacular demolition.
The eastern span of the 63-year-old bridge across the Hudson River in upstate New York came down in a controlled demolition at 10.52am on Tuesday, marking the end of an era for commuters in the region.
Despite bone-chilling temperatures of 29 degrees, hundreds gathered on the river banks and a nearby pier to watch the bridge come down.
Roughly 6,500 tons of steel fell about 140 feet into the river, where dive teams and boats will remove the debris in the coming days.

The explosions went off at 10.52am, after crowds had waited for an hour to see the demolition
A series of explosions on vertical supports brought the span down without damaging the new Tappan Zee built alongside, officially named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
The western span of the bridge will be brought down by the end of the year, officials said.
The demolition was originally scheduled for January 12 but had to be postponed due to high winds.
Boats were diverted to a 300-foot channel on the western side of the river prior to the demolition.
The eastern span came down some 63 years after it first opened across the Hudson River

Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier told the AP prior to the demolition that vessel traffic would be shut down for nearly an hour during the implosion.
Original plans were to remove the Tappan Zee piece by piece and avoid the use of explosives that could have an impact on Hudson River fish habitats. Eight counties had requested some of the 150 deck panels to be salvaged for reuse in other bridges.
But experts determined the old bridge was structurally unsound, preventing workers from continuing the piecemeal takedown.
The new bridge project was launched by the state Thruway Authority in 2013 after decades of political squabbling.
The old bridge was decaying and overburdened by the 140,000 vehicles that traveled it each day - substantially more than its designed capacity.
The Governor Malcolm Wilson–Tappan Zee Bridge first opened in December 1955, and crossed the Hudson River at one of its widest points.
The crossing acquired its name after the an Indian tribe called the Tappan, while Zee is the Dutch word for sea.

The crossing was built by the engineering firm Madigan-Hyland and designed by Emil Praeger.
Praeger went with a cantilever design, which is constructed with a rigid structural element and projects horizontally into space, supported on only one end.
The total length of the bridge approaches was 16,013 feet long, and located about 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.
The last vehicle to travel the 3.1-mile bridge was a 1929 Model A Ford Phaeton, driven by Seth Kestenbaum, in October 2017.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
