When even Ned Flanders opposes your idea, you know it is serious.

Harry Shearer, who voices the Simpsons character, is the latest to object to the £1.6billion A303 road tunnel being built near Stonehenge.

Shearer, 75, made his name in the 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap in which the fictitious rock band danced around a tiny model of the neolithic monument.

The US actor lodged his objection on behalf of Spinal Tap fans, saying: ‘I have an emotional connection to the place...and to the importance of preserving it for future generations of Tap fans.’

Highways England is planning to relocate the A303 - which currently runs south of the UNESCO world heritage site - as part of a £1.6 billion project.

In an official objection, Mr Shearer has urged the government to move the road further away from the historic monument.

Shearer, 75, from Los Angeles, played Derek Smalls, a member of the fictitious rock band Spinal Tap, in the famous 1984 mockumentary.

In a well-known scene in the film, the band orders a life-size Stonehenge to be lowered onto stage. But their sketch is mislabelled and the prop turns out to be just 18ins tall.

Shearer - also the voice of Mr Burns, Waylon Smithers, and Principal Skinner in The Simpsons - has lodged an official objection on behalf of Spinal Tap fans.

He wrote: 'As a member of the (admittedly fictitious) rock band Spinal Tap, whose performance of the song 'Stonehenge' has become internationally known.

'I have an emotional connection to the place, to its historic importance, and to the importance of preserving it for future generations-at least of Tap fans.

'I am part of a fictional band, Spinal Tap, created for the movie This Is Spinal Tap.

'In that guise, we've had a long-standing connection with Stonehenge which culminated in the band's visit to the monument following our 2009 show at Glastonbury.

'The act of standing near the stones and enjoying the silence of the site would be severely depreciated by the existence, and sound, of a nearby motorway.

'I should think this internationally-known monument would be deserving of more respect than this!'

The Government planning inspectorate will give a recommendation to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, who will make the final decision. The plan is expected to get approval or be rejected later this year.

Stonehenge is also the name of Spinal Tap's hit single, and the cast released a short film named after the neolithic site in 2009 to mark the film's 25th anniversary.

Speaking yesterday, Shearer said in a statement: 'We were driving back from Glastonbury and we saw the stones and at first thought that it was just an imitation, we couldn't believe how close it was to the road.

'It was seven in the evening and our keyboarder managed to get us in for a private viewing as the Sun was going down, it was the most perfect visit.

'I will be following the outcome and I hope that wiser heads prevail and that the scheme is moved further away from the site or scrapped completely.'

Earlier this week druids also objected to the plans. One said if the plans get the go-ahead, he would try to bring a judicial review at the High Court.

A spokesman for the Planning Inspectorate said: 'The application for the A303 at Stonehenge was accepted for examination by the Planning Inspectorate on November 16, 2018.

'There are many opportunities for people who may be affected by the proposed project to give their views both during the developer's public consultation and during the Planning Inspectorate's examination of the application.

'Following the examination, the Planning Inspectorate will make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport who will make the decision whether to grant development consent or not.

'There follows a period of six weeks during which the Secretary of State's decision can be challenged in the High Court.'

Harry S...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
