«Breaking News» Slimming World Chips are the first frozen chips to hit UK supermarket which have NOT been fried

Slimming World has unveiled its own frozen oven chips that contain half the calories of rival McCain's.

The Slimming World chunky chips are the first in the UK to have been grilled instead of fried before being frozen, making them a healthier option for shoppers.

The £2.25 chips, which will be available at Iceland stores and online later this month, will also be added to the Slimming World 'Free Food' list - meaning dieters can eat as many as they like without worrying.

But do the chips taste as good as they sound? FEMAIL's Jessica Rach put them to the test at home - and was surprised by the results.

She said: 'I was initially skeptical about the idea of low calorie chips as I'm not generally a fan of diet-related foods.

'However my preconception proved very wrong, and I was blown away by just how good they tasted.

'I skipped the step of adding low calorie cooking spray as I don't own any, and stuck the fries in the oven for 20 minutes - expecting them to come out dry and tasteless.

'They were however delicious, crispy and fluffy on the inside, with the potato skin making them outstanding.

'I'm a big fan of McDonald's fries but these chips really measured up to them, and you couldn't taste that they were grilled rather than fried at all.

How to make your own Slimming World Chips

The packaged frozen oven chips are based on the following recipe for oven chips that is popular within the Slimming World community:

Ingredients

  • 1kg floury potatoes cut into thick chips

  • Low calorie cooking spray

  • Salt

Serves: 4

Cooking time: 40 mins

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 200C/ Fan 180C/ Gas 6

  • Boil chips in a saucepan of boiling water over high heat for five minutes

  • Drain well, return to the pan and cover

  • Leave to cool slightly then shake the pan to roughen the edges

  • Line baking tray with baking parchment and arrange the chips in a single layer

  • Spray with low calorie cooking spray and bake for 20 minutes or until golden

  • Season with salt to serve

'I'd definitely get them again - just watch out you don't leave them in the oven for longer than 20 minutes if you don't own cooking spray!'

The Slimming World chunky chips contain just 104 calories and 0.3g fat per 100g serving (or 62.4 calories per 60g serving), and can be warmed up in the oven from frozen in 20 minutes.

In comparison, popular McCain Homefries contain 121 calories per recommended 60g serving.

Meanwhile a small portion of McDonald's fries, which weigh approximately 80g, contain a hearty 230 calories.

Finished result: Just 20 minutes later the chips were ready to eat. Jessica noted how good they tasted even though she hadn't used the recommended low-fat cooking oil

The packaged frozen fries are based on a popular recipe among the Slimming World community, which take 45 minutes to make from scratch.

The limited edition food will be available in Iceland stores and online from 21 January.

Jessica continued: 'Even without salt or ketchup the chips tasted deliciously flavoursome and moorish,' adding, 'I would definitely give them 5/5.'

The chips are also on the 'free' food list for Slimming World followers, which includes everyday food like lean meat, eggs and pasta, meaning they're filling and low in calories for their weight — so you can eat as much as you like without counting or weighing them in your daily allowance.

The release of the low fat chips comes shortly after Harvard academic Dr Eric Rimm warned that a portion of fries should contain just six chips.

Calling them 'starch bombs' and branding them 'disastrous' for your health, he warned that eating them three times a risk could increase the risk of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Writing in the New York Times last month, he claimed: 'There aren't a lot of people who are sending back three-quarters of an order of French fries.

'It would be nice if your meal came with a salad and six French fries.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
