«Breaking News» Merkel tells May there is still time to negotiate Brexit deal with EU

Angela Merkel urged Theresa May to come up with a new plan on Brexit today as she insisted there is still time to negotiate.

The German Chancellor heaped pressure on the PM by insisting the UK must provide solutions to the impasse after the House of Commons delivered a huge rejection of her deal.

The challenge came as EU splits emerged, with senior figures warning against delaying the Brexit date - while Michel Barnier said Brussels is ramping up no-deal preparations.

The comments appeared to clash with French President Emmanuel Macron, who last night suggested he believes the UK will need more time.

Ireland has also made clear it would not block any request to extend the Article 50 process.

The Irish PM Leo Varadkar today admitted that a no deal Brexit would hammer his country's economy.

But he laid the blame for the Brexit chaos at Mrs May's feet and said she must abandon her 'red lines' to get a deal done.

Speaking in Berlin this morning, Mrs Merkel suggested there was still enough time left to rework the package.

'We still have time to negotiate but we're now waiting on what the prime minister proposes,' she told reporters.

However, Berlin's foreign minister Heiko Maas insisted there should only be an extension if there was a 'path' to implementing a deal.

And Dr Volker Treier of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce said: 'Better a horrible ending than unending horror.'

Addressing MEPs in Strasbourg, the EU's chief negotiator Mr Barnier said he was 'sad' that MPs voted down the Brexit deal and made clear the bloc would now be stepping up 'contingency' planning.

He said the Commons had failed to 'define an alternative, insisting the existing package still represented 'the best possible compromise'.

He also ruled out abandoning the Irish border backstop - something Brexiteers have been demanding.

'It's up to the UK government now to decide how it will take things forward,' Mr Barnier told MEPs.

European politicians have been digesting the unprecedented drubbing handed out to the UK government last night.

EU Council President Donald Tusk suggested if MPs cannot agree a deal and don't want to crash out without one, they should consider reversing the historic vote.

And EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned that 'time is almost up' as he announced no deal planning will be ramped up in the wake of the defeat.

He made a dash back to Brussels for emergency Brexit meetings as the deal was voted down by 432 votes to 202 - meaning a staggering 230 MPs voted against her.

Mr Tusk said: 'If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?'

Mr Juncker said last night: 'The risk of a disorderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom has increased with this evening's vote.

'While we do not want this to happen, the European Commission will continue its contingency work to help ensure the EU is fully prepared.

'I urge the United Kingdom to clarify its intentions as soon as possible. Time is almost up.'

However, signs of divisions have started to emerge, with some senior figures such as Emmanuel Macron suggesting the Brexit process will have to be extended and others urging more compromise.

But Mr Barnier said Brussels was also stepping up its preparations for a no-deal Brexit.

In an interview on Deutschlandfunk public radio, Mr Maas played down the idea of extending Article 50.

'It would only make sense (to extend the deadline) if there is a path to the goal of a deal between the EU and Great Britain,' he said.

He also voiced doubt that any significant improvements could be made to the draft Withdrawal Agreement.

'We have a compromise,' Maas said. 'If more could have been offered, it would have been done weeks ago.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
